The Bradley Beal free agency begins as the Los Angeles Clippers guard has declined his $5.6 million player option for next season. This makes him an unrestricted free agent, according to ESPN Senior NBA Insider Shams Charania. The Miami Heat and Boston Celtics are potential landing spots for Beal.
Beal missed almost the entirety of this season due to a hip injury. He averaged 8.2 points per game while shooting 37.5% from the field. He also averaged 0.8 rebounds, 1.7 assists, 0.5 steals, and 0 blocks per game this season.
The Heat and Beal have a mutual interest in a signing this offseason, according to Brett Siegel, National NBA Insider and Reporter for Clutch Points. Miami tried to trade for him in 2023, but they were never able to get him because of his trade clause.
Beal would be open to signing with the Heat as he has Sunshine State roots. He played for the Florida Gators in college. Beal hoped to land with Miami in any trade and has been interested in joining them ever since he departed from the Washington Wizards franchise in 2023.
Beal’s decision wouldn’t be directly blocked by LeBron James’, but it could still be influenced by the evolution of that situation. The Heat are interested in both players. Their hypothetical starting lineup could be Davion Mitchell, Andrew Wiggins, LeBron, Giannis Antetokounmpo, and Bam Adebayo.
Beal can be a good pickup for them if he is fine embracing the spot-up role more. He has been an efficient catch-and-shoot and spot-up player almost every year. He is still a viable floor spacer with some level of self-creation. Beal can be a good sixth man.
The Celtics could also position themselves for Beal, particularly due to his closeness with Jayson Tatum, according to SteinLine writer Jake Fischer. They both grew up together in St. Louis, and Tatum even attended Beal’s wedding last year. His shooting ability would be added to work off Tatum.
Boston has an open roster spot and could look to offset some of the scoring lost with Jaylen Brown’s trade to the Philadelphia 76ers. At his best, Beal remains a guard capable of creating his own shot, playing with or without the ball, and providing an experienced offensive option.
The gamble would still be significant, though. Beal only played six games last season due to his physical issues, and the Celtics would be adding another fragile veteran to a roster already plagued by several medical uncertainties. In the last five years, which is a half-decade of basketball, the most games he played in a season was only 53.
A signing at the veteran minimum would also push Boston back above the luxury tax, while the franchise is currently sitting about $1.7 million under the line. Brad Stevens will therefore likely need to make another move before the trade deadline to hope to reset the repeater tax. Their hypothetical starting lineup could be Derrick White, Beal, Paul George, Tatum, and Mitchell Robinson.

Beal continues to be mentioned in off-season chatter as teams look for veteran scoring, but no new deal or blockbuster move has been announced today. He remains one of the biggest names left in NBA free agency and could become one of the offseason’s most impactful veteran signings.
Beal holds a career playoff record of 22-27 in 49 postseason games. Over his postseason career, split between the Wizards and Phoenix Suns, he has averaged 22.9 points, 4.4 rebounds, and 3.8 assists per game.
