The Minnesota Timberwolves are in uncharted territory, and Anthony Edwards is the reason why. With an electric postseason run, a fearless playing style, and superstar swagger, Edwards is building something in Minnesota that fans have never seen before: a true playoff legacy. While it’s still early in his career, the question is already starting to feel legitimate: Could Anthony Edwards become the greatest Timberwolf of all time?

Current Timberwolves GOAT: Kevin Garnett

Kevin Garnett remains the undisputed GOAT of the Timberwolves, for now. Garnett was not just the best player in franchise history; he was the team’s identity for over a decade. From 1995 to 2007, Garnett brought relentless intensity, elite defense, and unmatched versatility to the court.

Anthony Edwards is having the torch passed from Kevin Garnett
Kevin Garnett as a Timberwolf

During his time in Minnesota, Garnett:

  • Made six All-Defensive First Teams and two Second Teams
  • Was named 2004 NBA MVP
  • Earned 10 All-Star selections
  • Was selected to the All-NBA First Team twice, Second Team three times, and Third Team twice

He led the league in total rebounds for four consecutive seasons and carried Minnesota to the 2004 Western Conference Finals—still the farthest the franchise had gone prior to this season.

But despite his individual brilliance, Garnett’s era was marked by a lack of playoff success, often due to a revolving door of subpar rosters and front office mismanagement. Outside of that lone 2004 run, he never made it past the first round with the Wolves. His legacy in Minnesota is iconic, but not without its limits.

Timberwolves Potential GOAT: Anthony Edwards

Now, enter Ant, the explosive shooting guard with charisma and a killer instinct that has turned the Timberwolves into legitimate contenders. Since being drafted No. 1 overall in 2020, Edwards has steadily improved each year, and now, in his fifth season, he’s made back-to-back All-NBA Second Team appearances and been selected to three consecutive All-Star Games.

More importantly, he’s doing something even Garnett couldn’t, winning in the playoffs.

In the 2025 postseason, Edwards has elevated his game, routinely outdueling established stars and leading Minnesota to playoff series wins that once seemed impossible. His fearlessness in crunch time, highlight-reel plays, and vocal leadership have drawn comparisons to Michael Jordan. While that might sound like an exaggeration, Ant has been backing up the hype.

Ant has earned the moniker of a “legend killer,” taking out both LeBron and the Lakers and Stephen Curry and the Warriors in this playoff run.

He’s not doing it alone, of course. Julius Randle, Rudy Gobert, Jaden McDaniels, and others have all played key roles. But it’s Edwards who’s clearly the alpha, the player defenses game plan for, the man leading the charge in Minnesota.

End of My Anthony Edwards Rant

If Ant leads the Timberwolves to an NBA championship, his legacy takes a massive leap forward, potentially surpassing Garnett’s in the eyes of a new generation of fans. He already has more postseason success in five seasons than KG had in over a decade in Minnesota. The accolades are stacking up quickly. All he would need to be the consensus GOAT of the organization would be more longevity.

Garnett built the foundation for basketball in Minnesota. Edwards might be the one who finally turns the Timberwolves into champions.

Being down 3-1 to the Thunder, the odds of this happening this year are not very high. Especially if Ant repeats his game four performance later in the series, this would make the Timberwolves’ win even more legendary if they end up coming back… of which I don’t think they will.

The last time the Thunder were in the Western Conference Finals, they went up 3-1 over the Golden State Warriors in 2016 before losing the series in seven games. Will history repeat itself with the Timberwolves?
