The Ryder Cup is one of the great golf championships. It is not a major, but as a team event between the US and EU Ryder Cup teams, there are always great golfers in this championship. Equally, there have been some great Ryder Cup teams. These are the greatest teams in Ryder Cup history.
Great Britain hardly ever won the Ryder Cup. The dominance of the US Ryder Cup team had become all the more apparent; this Great Britain Ryder Cup was one exception. Not since 1933 had the British beaten the US Ryder Cup team, and on the opening day, it seemed that this might remain the case as the US dominated the foursomes.
However, the British showed commendable spirit and rallied to draw level with the Americans. Then O’Connor sealed the Ryder Cup for Great Britain, and the Ryder Cup ended 7.5 to 4.5. It was the last time a British team would win the Ryder Cup, and the US would dominate into the 1980s.
One of the great US Ryder Cup teams proved that the Ryder Cup was increasingly uncompetitive in 1967. The US team, captained by Ben Hogan, included some of the great golfers, including Palmer and Casper. The only comparable British player was Tony Jacklin, but even his talents could not prevent a US whitewash in 1967. The US Ryder Cup team won the Ryder Cup by a record 23.5 to 8.5.
The question of whether the US could be beaten in the Ryder Cup had not been answered by the EU Ryder Cup teams in the early 1980s. Although they had gone close in the previous Ryder Cup. This Ryder Cup team, captained by Jacklin, would bring to an end the US dominance of the Ryder Cup at the Belfry. The team had some of the world’s best players, such as Ballesteros, Langer, and Faldo, who were serious contenders to the US golfers in the majors. They became the first EU Ryder Cup team to win the Ryder Cup 16.5 to 11.5.
This EU Ryder Cup team went to the US to win the Ryder Cup on American soil. Not an easy task, but this EU Ryder Cup team had some of the top players in the game, such as Garcia, Montgomerie, Westwood, and Harrington. With such players, they not only won, but did so with a record victory against the US team by 18.5 to 9.5.
Those were four of the best Ryder Cup teams. The 2027 Ryder Cup takes place in Adare Manor, County Limerick. Then, the US and EU teams will once again be playing for the coveted Ryder Cup trophy and to write themselves into golfing history like those above.
