The Champions League includes many of the best club teams in the world, and they have some fantastic players. Messi, Zidane, Gerrard, Ronaldo, and Henry are just a few of the stars who have lit up that cup. There have been plenty of great Champions League goals, and these are a few of the best scored.
Zinedine Zidane
In the 2002 Champions League final, Real Madrid played the German team Bayer Leverkusen. The scoreline was 1-1 when Carlos surged down the left flank of the pitch. The ball was lobbed up in the air into the penalty box and fell to Zidane. Then Zidane volleyed the ball into the back of Leverkusen’s net from the edge of the penalty box. For many, this was the most iconic goal ever scored in the Champions League, as it also won the cup for Real Madrid, with the final scoreline remaining 2-1.
Mauro Bressan
In the group stages of the Champions League, Fiorentina came up against Barcelona. It was a cracking game, and it included one of the most spectacular Champions League goals. Early in the first half, the ball was cleared out of the Barcelona penalty box. One of Fiorentina’s players picked up on the clearance and booted the ball a little into the air again, and then it bounced up for Bressan. Bressan’s bicycle kick from outside the box sent the ball flying into the top left of the Barcelona net. The match ended 3-3, and both teams made it through to the next round.
Hugo Almeida
Porto played Inter Milan in the 2005 Champions League. At a somewhat empty San Siro, Porto won a free-kick some 30 yards out from goal. Almedia stepped up to take it. The ball was struck low and with considerable pace and flew into the back of Inter’s net. What a goal! Whilst Porto still lost the game, this goal was certainly a match highlight.
Steven Gerrard
On their way to Champions League glory, Liverpool played Olympiakos in the group stage. They had to beat them to make it to the next round. The game was level at 1-1 when the ball was headed low to Gerrard. The ball bounced just outside the penalty box semi-circle, and then Gerrard struck a fine goal into the right of the net from some way out. It sealed a vital 2-1 victory for the Reds.
Stelios Giannakopoulos
Another of the great Champions League goals was scored by Olympiakos’ Giannakopoulos against Porto. The ball was played into Giannakopoulos from the left. Then Giannakopoulous picked up the ball from some way out of the box, and he struck it with power and precision. The ball flew some way up and then fell into the back of the net for a wonderful goal.
