Barcelona has been dealt a huge blow as the Commercial Court of Barcelona has formally rejected the club’s appeal to register Dani Olmo. This means his future with the Catalans is uncertain after January 1st, and he could even possibly become a free agent.

Dani Olmo Could Leave For Free

Barcelona signed Dani Olmo from RB Leipzig in a deal worth €60 million in the summer transfer window. He signed a six-year contract that bound his return to the Spanish Giants until 2030. That contract, however, is in jeopardy as Barcelona have now had their appeal rejected by the commercial court to register the Spanish Midfielder for the second part of the season.

Mundo Deportivo reports that Barcelona is now in a race against time to register their midfielder. They have been given a deadline of Tuesday, December 31st, one day before the January transfer window opens, to do whatever they can.

La Liga’s Strict Wage Cap Rules

Barcelona were given the green light to register Dani Olmo after their squad had been hit by persistent injuries, allowing them to set aside a percentage of their wages to register the former La Masia graduate. However, his registration was valid only for the first half of the season, and his fourth-month authorization expires at the end of December.

Barcelona signed Olmo after Andreas Christensen’s Achilles injury sidelined the defender for four months. This allowed the club to use 80% of the centre-back’s wages to register Olmo. Ilkay Gundogan, Victor Roque, and Clement Lenglet, who left the club in the summer, also facilitated the midfielder’s transfer from Leipzig.

Final Appeal

According to Spanish media, Barcelona has submitted an appeal to the magistrate court in a final desperate attempt to register Olmo for the second part of the season. The court will hear the case on Monday, just one day before the deadline. Dani Olmo has contributed seven goals in 15 games for Barcelona in the four months he’s been at the club and has certainly made a significant impact under Hansi Flick.

End Of Rant

Barca will have their fingers crossed on this one, or they might see their marquee summer signing leave for free in the January transfer window. It was a fascinating few days for neutrals but nerve-racking for Barcelona and its fans.
