Arsenal vs Coventry kicks off the defense of the Premier League title on Friday, August 21 at 8 pm BST at the Emirates. For all Arsenal’s summer business, Mikel Arteta’s biggest selection headaches aren’t about who he’s signed — they’re about who starts.

Arsenal has more attacking and midfield options than at almost any point under Arteta. It opened the season with a 3-0 win over Manchester City in the Community Shield.

The extra depth doesn’t make Friday’s team selection easier. If anything, it makes it harder, because Arteta now has three genuinely debatable calls to make before kickoff.

Arteta confirmed Declan Rice, Bukayo Saka and Martín Zubimendi were all available for the Community Shield after their post-World Cup breaks. All three appeared in the win — though Saka and Rice both came on as second-half substitutes rather than starting.

Jurrien Timber (groin/hip/pelvis) and William Saliba (lower back) remain sidelined and are expected to miss the Coventry game as well. Cristhian Mosquera and Gabriel, therefore, are set to continue at center-back with Ben White at right-back.

Team news is worth double-checking closer to kickoff, as injury situations can shift quickly this close to a game.

The availability question for Saka and Rice is already settled — both are fit enough to be involved. What’s still genuinely open is whether either of them starts, and who leads the line between Viktor Gyökeres and Kai Havertz.

Should Bukayo Saka Start Against Coventry?

Saka is back in contention after missing Arsenal’s preseason schedule following his extended post-World Cup break. Reporting ahead of the Coventry game suggests he’s now expected to come into the side on the right wing rather than repeat his substitute role from the Community Shield.

The harder question isn’t really whether Saka starts against Coventry — most current reporting expects he will. It’s whether 90 minutes on the opening night is the right call, given Arsenal travel to Aston Villa on August 29 for their second league fixture just eight days later.

Arsenal could manage Saka’s minutes carefully across both games rather than rushing him into a full match so soon after his return.

My call: Saka starts against Coventry but should be withdrawn around the hour mark if Arsenal are in control, with one eye already on Villa.

Does Declan Rice Need To Be Rushed Back?

This is the biggest call of the three. Rice, like Saka, missed Arsenal’s preseason schedule after his own extended World Cup break. Rice came on only as a substitute in the Community Shield — meaning he’s played just 45 minutes of football since the tournament ended.

Current reporting suggests Rice could again start on the bench against Coventry. Arteta is tempted to give him extra rest in a fixture Arsenal should be capable of winning without him.

What makes the Rice rest decision genuinely interesting is that Arsenal no longer have to treat it as a binary choice between “start Rice” and “weaken the midfield.”

Bruno Guimarães has arrived from Newcastle. Zubimendi has been established since last season, and Myles Lewis-Skelly started every game of preseason and was excellent again in the Community Shield.

Guimarães, Zubimendi, and Lewis-Skelly gave Arsenal control of the midfield against City. Arteta doesn’t need to gamble on an undercooked Rice simply because he’s one of his most important players. He has a midfield that can function without him for a half, or even a full match, in a way it may not have twelve months ago.

Myy call: Rice starts on the bench and is introduced only if Arsenal need extra control or protection in the second half.

Viktor Gyökeres Or Kai Havertz Up Front?

Gyökeres or Havertz up front is the selection battle most likely to divide opinion, and it doesn’t have an obvious answer. Gyökeres is the established center-forward after his first season at the club, scoring 14 goals and giving Arsenal a focal point they’d lacked in previous years.

Havertz offers a different profile. He is more mobile and more comfortable dropping into midfield to link play. He is reportedly favored by Arteta for the visit of Coventry specifically.

There’s a real case for either player. Gyökeres’ physicality and penalty-box presence make him a perfectly logical choice against a newly promoted side likely to defend deep. That low block can be vulnerable to crosses, second balls and sustained physical pressure as it is to a striker who drops and combines.

Coventry, promoted as Championship winners under Frank Lampard, are expected to sit in exactly that kind of compact shape at the Emirates. Havertz’s has the ability, though, to link Arsenal’s midfield and attack and drop into pockets of space between Coventry’s lines. He could be more valuable if the visitors defend with two disciplined banks rather than conceding obvious crossing opportunities.

My call: Havertz starts, with Gyökeres available as an impact option if Arsenal need a more direct focal point late on.

End Of My Arsenal Vs Coventry Rant: What These Three Arteta Decisions Say About Arsenal

None of Arteta’s calls exist in isolation. Together, they describe a squad that finally has the depth to make selection genuinely competitive at both ends of the pitch, rather than picking itself.

Saka starting but on a leash, Rice held back to protect a title-winning midfield rather than risk it, and Havertz preferred over Gyökeres for a specific tactical reason rather than reputation. Arteta will use his depth deliberately rather than simply naming his best individual players.

My prediction: Saka starts and is withdrawn around the hour mark, Rice begins on the bench, and Havertz leads the line. Whether Arteta actually goes that way says as much about how he intends to manage a long title defense as anything that happens once Coventry kick off.
