The Philadelphia Phillies trading for Chapman makes a ton of sense when looking at the outlook of their bullpen. They have Jhoan Duran for the ninth inning, but it gets shaky before that. They don’t have a reliable lefty in the pen after the struggles of Jose Alvarado and Tanner Banks. They also don’t have a true setup man with Brad Keller facing his own hardships. Chapman would fill both of those roles as Philadelphia looks to make a push for October.
The Los Angeles Dodgers don’t necessarily “need” anything at the trade deadline this year. They are the best team in baseball with a pretty dominant bullpen. With that being said, they have the farm system to trade for anyone in the sport. Adding pitching depth would be the best thing for them to do at the deadline, and Chapman seems like a perfect target.
The Seattle Mariners thought they had their closer position locked up going into the season, but Andres Munoz has not been able to hold it down. Adding Chapman would bring back reliability while being able to give Munoz a lesser role. This is one of the best landing spots for Chapman if he wants to remain a true closer rather than a setup guy.
