One of the bigger surprises in baseball has been the breakout season of Angel Martinez. The reigning American League player of the week has been on a tear to start the year. Before the season, he was a league-average platoon bat with above-average versatility. So far in 2026, he looks like a franchise cornerstone. Hitting .266 with 9 HRs, 24 RBIs, and an 822 OPS has made him an everyday player for a contending Cleveland Guardians team.

Before 2026, his career OPS was .677 until this season, where it has gone up drastically. What has changed this season for him is his ability to barrel the baseball and eliminate whiffing at pitches. While the chase rate is still higher than you would like, he’s made major strides in his approach to hitting. Another metric that has increased is his hard hit percentage, going from 29.2% to 38.1%.

The defense he has played this season has also been something to appreciate. Moving to a primary outfielder role in 2o26 has worked well for the Guardians and his development. His range (OAA) is in the 86th percentile, making him one of the most valuable defensive players in baseball. In terms of arm strength, he is also at the top of the league in the 93rd percentile. Overall, the defense has been just as good, if not better than, the offense in 2026.

How Sustainable Is His Early-Season Success?

The question becomes, can he keep up this solid play throughout the season and into the playoffs? Every metric would point towards yes, because of the areas of improvement he has cleaned up. Another positive sign is the switch-hitting ability that allows him to hit the ball to all parts of the field.

His defense will always keep him in the lineup, giving him consistent at-bats to stay sharp. This season, he appears to be a player who hits in bunches. In a series against the Reds, he went 4/12 with 2 HR, 5 RBIs, and scored 5 runs. A player with the offensive upside that he has should continue to be a key contributor for the Guardians moving forward.

Looking towards the future of the franchise, he, along with Chase DeLauter, looks like a long-term outfield option. Steven Kwan, who was a down season, could potentially be traded, establishing him as an everyday outfielder for the foreseeable future.

At only 24 years old, his contract status is still “pre-arbitration,” meaning he is still years away from entering free agency. Although a long-term extension is unlikely, you can’t rule it out.

What Is His Ceiling As a Player?

The player he can become is still up in the air, but a 20 HR, 800 OPS player is very much in the realm of possibility. Watching him play, you see how dynamic a player he is offensively and defensively. He has ways to go, but a player that has a similar play style to him is Ronald Acuña Jr. Both players play a great outfield position with live arms and great range. Offensively, they can hit for power and average, displaying power to all parts of the field.

Acuña has accomplished much more in his career so far, but he has similar tools to the former MVP. Each season, you could argue he has grown as a player, whether it’s statistically or mentally. He also mentions that Jose Ramirez has been a great mentor early in his career. Both players from the Dominican Republic who came up with the Guardians share a lot of similarities.

To conclude, his ceiling is very high, and the numbers this season are proving why. In 2026, he’s broken out but still has a lot of work to do to become an elite, well-rounded player.

End Of My Angel Martinez Rant

It has been fun to watch him develop into a good baseball player this season and contribute to the Guardians’ success. While some areas of improvement (chase rate, hard hit %, and exit velocity) could improve, it’s hard not to see how much he’s grown as a player. With Ramirez mentoring him, you also picture how good he can become in the near future. Nonetheless, the breakout season is upon us and should continue throughout the remainder of the 2026 season.
