The NFL Week 1 winners and losers already gave fans plenty to talk about heading into the second week of the 2026 season.
The Chicago Bears exploded for 59 points against the Carolina Panthers, Josh Allen led the Buffalo Bills past the Houston Texans in a thriller, and the Detroit Lions survived the New Orleans Saints in overtime. Meanwhile, the New York Giants stunned the Dallas Cowboys behind an impressive debut from Jaxson Dart, while Derrick Henry powered the Baltimore Ravens to a convincing victory over Indianapolis.
The biggest surprises were not limited to the winners. The Green Bay Packers suffered a stunning collapse against Minnesota, the Los Angeles Rams struggled badly against San Francisco, and the Cowboys’ defense failed to slow down a Giants offense that controlled the game for long stretches.
With Week 1 complete, here are the biggest NFL Week 1 winners and losers and what their performances could mean for the rest of the 2026 season.
The Chicago Bears immediately announced themselves as one of the most dangerous offenses in the NFL by destroying the Carolina Panthers 59-37.
Caleb Williams accounted for four touchdowns, while D’Andre Swift rushed for 124 yards and three touchdowns. Chicago consistently created explosive plays and showed the kind of offensive identity that could make the Bears a serious problem for opposing defenses.
The only concern was on the other side of the ball. Carolina still gained 478 total yards and scored 37 points, meaning Chicago cannot expect its offense to rescue the defense every week. Still, scoring 59 points in the opener is an enormous statement, and the Bears enter Week 2 as one of the biggest winners of the opening weekend.
Josh Allen delivered exactly the kind of performance Buffalo needed from its franchise quarterback.
Allen produced four total touchdowns and 357 total yards as the Bills defeated the Houston Texans 36-31. More importantly, Buffalo responded when the game was on the line, putting together a 96-yard winning drive that ultimately gave the Bills the victory.
The performance matters because Buffalo did not simply overwhelm Houston from start to finish. The Bills had to survive a competitive game and execute under pressure, which makes the victory even more encouraging.
If Allen continues playing at this level, Buffalo should remain one of the AFC’s most dangerous teams.
The Detroit Lions found a way to win one of the wildest games of Week 1.
Detroit defeated the New Orleans Saints 31-30 in overtime after Jahmyr Gibbs rushed for 156 yards and two touchdowns. The Lions also survived a crucial late sequence when they stopped New Orleans on a two-point attempt, keeping the game within reach before winning in overtime.
Jared Goff then connected with Amon-Ra St. Brown for the game-winning touchdown.
The Lions did not dominate every phase of the game, but they showed something just as important: the ability to survive a chaotic game and make the decisive plays late. That resilience could become one of Detroit’s biggest strengths throughout the season.
The New York Giants entered Week 1 with plenty of questions surrounding their offense. Jaxson Dart answered several of them immediately.
Dart completed 23 of 29 passes for 230 yards and three touchdowns while adding 54 rushing yards in the Giants’ 28-20 victory over Dallas. New York also rushed for 165 yards and controlled the ball for more than 36 minutes.
The impressive part was not simply Dart’s statistics. The Giants played with discipline, protected their quarterback, controlled the clock and consistently put pressure on a Dallas defense that struggled to get off the field.
The Giants still have plenty to prove, but Week 1 showed that Dart and this offense may be further along than many expected.
Derrick Henry reminded the NFL why he remains one of the league’s most difficult players to stop.
Henry rushed for 144 yards and three touchdowns as the Baltimore Ravens defeated the Indianapolis Colts 41-23. Lamar Jackson also delivered an outstanding performance, throwing for 324 yards and a touchdown while adding a rushing score.
Baltimore finished with 506 total yards, creating a balanced offensive attack that forced Indianapolis to defend both Henry’s physical running style and Jackson’s ability to make plays through the air.
The Ravens’ performance was one of the clearest signs from Week 1 that this team has the offensive firepower to compete at the top of the AFC.
Patrick Mahomes’ return was one of the biggest storylines of the NFL offseason, and Kansas City gave its quarterback the perfect opening-night result.
The Chiefs defeated the Denver Broncos 31-10 as Mahomes returned from the knee injury that ended his 2025 season. Mahomes finished with two passing touchdowns and also added a rushing touchdown, giving Kansas City an efficient performance without requiring him to carry the entire offense.
The biggest surprise, however, was Kenneth Walker III.
Walker rushed for 173 yards and two touchdowns while finishing with 191 yards from scrimmage. At the same time, Kansas City’s defense held Denver to just 176 total yards and nine first downs.
That combination is particularly encouraging for the Chiefs. Mahomes does not necessarily need to produce spectacular numbers every week if Kansas City can run the football effectively and play dominant defense.
The Dallas Cowboys entered the season expecting to compete in the NFC, but their Week 1 defensive performance raised immediate concerns.
Dallas allowed the Giants to control the clock, establish the run and keep the offense on the field for long stretches. Jaxson Dart was rarely forced into uncomfortable situations, while the Giants’ rushing attack consistently created manageable situations.
Dallas struggled to get off the field and allowed New York to dictate the tempo for long stretches, making the Cowboys one of the biggest disappointments of Week 1.
One poor defensive performance does not define a season, but the Cowboys will need answers quickly if they want to remain in the NFC playoff conversation.
The Panthers’ defense had no answer for Chicago’s offense.
Allowing 59 points is obviously the headline, but the bigger issue was how consistently the Bears generated explosive plays. Caleb Williams found opportunities through the air, while D’Andre Swift repeatedly punished Carolina on the ground.
Carolina did show offensive fight by scoring 37 points, but that only makes the defensive performance more frustrating. The Panthers cannot expect to win many games if opponents can score at this rate.
The Week 1 result exposed a major area that Carolina must fix before facing stronger offenses.
The Los Angeles Rams were one of the biggest disappointments of the opening weekend after falling 27-7 to the San Francisco 49ers in Melbourne.
Matthew Stafford finished with just 155 passing yards and an interception, while the Rams struggled to generate consistent offensive momentum. San Francisco took control after halftime and scored 24 unanswered points to turn the game into a comfortable victory.
The Rams’ problem was not simply the final score. The offense failed to create enough explosive plays, and San Francisco’s defense consistently made life difficult for Stafford.
Los Angeles has too much talent to panic after one game, but the Week 1 performance exposed questions that cannot be ignored.
Few teams experienced a more painful collapse than the Green Bay Packers.
Green Bay appeared to have control against the Minnesota Vikings before the game completely changed. Minnesota scored the final 29 points and turned what looked like a promising Packers performance into a 39-22 defeat.
Jordan Love and the Packers’ offense struggled to respond once Minnesota gained momentum, while the Vikings’ defense repeatedly created pressure and disrupted Green Bay’s rhythm.
The result is particularly concerning because Green Bay did not simply lose a close game. The Packers allowed the contest to completely slip away, making their Week 1 collapse one of the biggest surprises of the opening weekend.
The biggest surprise from Week 1 may be how quickly several teams changed the expectations surrounding their seasons.
The Bears suddenly look like an offense capable of competing with anyone. The Giants appear to have found confidence in Jaxson Dart. The Chiefs showed they can win without asking Mahomes to do everything, while the Ravens and Bills immediately looked like legitimate AFC contenders.
At the same time, the Packers, Rams and Cowboys created questions that did not appear nearly as significant before the season began.
That is what makes Week 1 so important. The first game rarely tells the entire story, but it can expose problems that teams must address before those problems become trends.
The biggest lesson from the NFL Week 1 winners and losers is that offensive identity matters.
Chicago established its identity through explosive offense and a strong rushing attack. Baltimore used Derrick Henry and Lamar Jackson to create constant problems for Indianapolis. Buffalo relied on Allen’s playmaking ability when the game entered its most important moments.
Meanwhile, the teams that struggled often failed to maintain control once momentum shifted.
Green Bay could not stop Minnesota’s comeback. Dallas could not consistently get off the field. The Rams could not generate enough offense after San Francisco adjusted.
None of these teams should be judged solely by one game, but Week 1 has already created a clear list of questions that will follow them into Week 2.
The first week of the 2026 NFL season delivered exactly what fans expect from the league: unexpected winners, disappointing performances and several games that completely changed direction.
The Bears, Bills, Lions, Giants, Ravens and Chiefs all gave fans reasons to be optimistic. Meanwhile, the Cowboys, Panthers, Rams and Packers now have something to prove.
The most important takeaway is that the NFL remains unpredictable. A strong Week 1 performance can establish momentum, but teams must prove they can repeat it. Likewise, a disappointing opener does not end a season, but the problems exposed in that game cannot be ignored.
Week 2 will begin separating the genuine contenders from the teams that simply benefited from one strong afternoon.
Week 1 produced enough surprises to make early-season predictions nearly impossible. The real winners will be the teams that can build on their opening performances, while the losers will be those that fail to correct the problems exposed during the first weekend.
For now, the 2026 NFL season has already delivered plenty of reasons to keep watching.
