India enter Delhi as the reigning 2026 T20 World Cup champions, but the period since that triumph has produced more questions than expected. Shreyas Iyer’s captaincy era began with a series loss to Ireland before India also struggled against England, leaving the 3-0 Zimbabwe sweep as the main positive result. Afghanistan now provides a much more experienced test of whether the Indians have actually moved beyond that difficult start.

The bigger Indian concern is consistency rather than a lack of talent. India’s batting has been unpredictable, while the opening combination has become a genuine selection headache just when the team needs stability. That makes this opener an important test of where Iyer’s side stands after the World Cup.
India’s most important decision could come before the first ball is bowled. Abhishek Sharma, Vaibhav Sooryavanshi and Sanju Samson are competing for two positions, with Ishan Kishan’s recent form making the situation even more complicated. The choice will shape how aggressively India can approach the powerplay.
Sharma’s post-World Cup numbers are difficult to ignore. In 10 T20I innings since India’s title triumph, he has scored 191 runs at an average of 19.10 and a strike rate of 166.09, with one half-century. The numbers represent a clear drop from the destructive powerplay batting India have come to expect.

Sharma’s importance goes beyond his aggregate. His ability to take a game away in the first six overs is one of India’s biggest weapons, which makes his current lack of consistency particularly significant. Afghanistan will want to attack him early and prevent India from getting the fast start they need.
Sooryavanshi has forced his way into the conversation through performance. The teenager scored 151 runs in India’s 3-0 series win over Zimbabwe and was named Player of the Series after an unbeaten 81 from 49 balls in the final T20I. His overall T20I record now stands at 193 runs from six innings at a strike rate of 189.22.

The question is whether India is prepared to prioritize that momentum over Samson’s experience. Recent training footage showing Sooryavanshi working with Gautam Gambhir and Sitanshu Kotak only adds to the sense that the youngster is being seriously considered for a starting role.
Samson has the strongest case for continuity because he was part of India’s successful 2026 T20 World Cup campaign. Since then, however, he has scored only 33 runs in four T20I innings at an average of 8.25, making his position far less secure than it was during the tournament.

Ishan Kishan adds another complication after scoring 145 runs in the Zimbabwe series and 317 during India’s 2026 T20 World Cup campaign. India therefore has a genuine choice between experience, recent momentum and proven form, with the final combination likely to reveal how aggressively the management wants to move beyond the World Cup setup.
Sharma and Sooryavanshi should open, with Kishan at No. 3 and Shreyas Iyer following him. The selection rewards current form while retaining Kishan’s recent production, although it would mean leaving Samson out despite his World Cup pedigree.

Their presence gives Iyer more ways to manage Afghanistan’s experienced batting lineup.
Ibrahim Zadran takes charge of an Afghanistan side packed with international and franchise experience. Rahmanullah Gurbaz, Mohammad Nabi, Rashid Khan, Azmatullah Omarzai, Noor Ahmad, Mujeeb Ur Rahman, Naveen-ul-Haq and Fazalhaq Farooqi give Afghanistan proven performers across batting, bowling and all-round roles.

Afghanistan also arrive after winning an ODI series against Ireland 3-1 in August, with Sediqullah Atal and Zadran among the contributors. Those were ODIs rather than T20Is, but the result still suggests that Afghanistan’s senior group is entering the series with competitive momentum rather than relying purely on reputation.
India has won eight of the nine T20Is between the teams, with one match ending without a result. Afghanistan have therefore never beaten India in this format, although the 2024 Bengaluru match required a Super Over before India finally prevailed. That history clearly favors India, but this Indian side is entering a transitional period that makes the old record less decisive.
Arun Jaitley Stadium has hosted 20 T20 matches, with the chasing team winning 14 times and the team batting first winning six. The average first-innings score is 149, while the highest successful chase stands at 212/3, making the toss potentially important in Delhi. The venue also adds importance to India’s opening combination. A team that can preserve wickets while scoring at a strong rate in the powerplay could be well placed for a chase, while Afghanistan’s spinners will want to make the middle overs uncomfortable.
India should begin as favorites, but the real question is whether they can finally produce a convincing all-phase performance under Iyer. The opening combination remains unsettled, the post-World Cup results have been uneven, and Afghanistan have enough experience to exploit another poor start. A victory will matter, but the manner of that victory could matter even more.
The predicted XI favors Abhishek Sharma and Sooryavanshi at the top, with Kishan at No. 3 and Nitish Kumar Reddy adding balance. That is a bet on current form rather than reputation, and it would give India an aggressive left-handed core before Iyer takes control of the middle order.
Afghanistan’s route into the game is clear: attack the Indians’ top order, use spin intelligently through the middle overs and get meaningful runs from Gurbaz or Zadran. India should still edge the opener, but another disjointed batting performance would bring the same questions from the Ireland and England series straight back.

India enters the series with the world champion tag but also with something to prove after an uneven start to the new T20I era. The opening battle between Sharma, Sooryavanshi and Samson is the clearest sign of that transition. At the same time, Bumrah and Varun give the Indians the bowling quality to back up a new-look selection. Afghanistan can make the opener uncomfortable, but India should edge it if the champions finally turn their individual quality into a complete T20 performance.
