The Boston Celtics have reportedly expressed interest in signing former lottery pick Devin Carter. The guard was recently waived by the Atlanta Hawks. The Celtics are the only team that has been reported to have interest.
Devin Carter is a guard who was a recent lottery pick in the 2024 NBA draft. He spent his first two seasons in the NBA with the Sacramento Kings before being traded to the Atlanta Hawks this offseason. He was eventually waived by Atlanta and placed on waivers.
The Celtics were immediately reported as interested by Jake Fischer, and news could be announced once Carter clears waivers.
Carter has not been given much of an opportunity in the NBA. He has been stuck behind other guards in Sacramento and has not been able to stick in the rotation. He has played in 74 games (12 starts) in his two seasons. Carter averaged a career-high 18.4 minutes a night last season.
Carter averaged 8.9 in 2025-26, but was severely inefficient. He shot 41% from the field and 26% from three. He would need to find some efficiency if he plans on becoming a piece of the Boston Celtics in 2026.
Carter is very skilled on the defensive end of the floor, and that is where a majority of his potential comes from. The Celtics could see some similarities between Carter’s defensive skill set and Derrick White’s, although that would represent the best-case scenario for the young guard. He still has a very long way to go.
The Celtics would be taking a bet in potential here if they go through with the signing. It’s a low-risk, high-reward type of move that makes a lot of sense.
Carter would be able to learn from veteran Mike Conley, who could be another template as the type of player he could become.
