Manchester United vs Everton will offer the first real test of whether Michael Carrick’s side has fixed the problems that their 5-2 win over Ipswich managed to hide. Bruno Fernandes scored a hat-trick. Marcus Rashford started his first Premier League game in nearly two years. Bryan Mbeumo and Matheus Cunha contributed. After the opening-day 2-0 defeat at Hull City, the result felt like a release.
Yet the 5-2 scoreline also hid something important. Ipswich took the lead. United had to dig themselves out of early difficulty. A late defensive mistake still allowed a consolation goal.
The five goals told the story of United’s attacking improvement. The scores did not fully tell the story of their defensive control. Sunday’s fixture at Hill Dickinson Stadium is the first real chance to test whether those issues have been fixed.
Against Ipswich, United eventually dominated once the game became open. Fernandes was outstanding, finishing with three goals and an assist. The attacking combinations looked sharp and the confidence returned.
The first half, though, told a different story. Ipswich scored first through Leif Davis. United was forced to recover rather than dictate. The equalizer came after a mistake in midfield. Even after taking control, a late error from Lisandro Martinez allowed Ipswich a second goal. The United slow-start pattern matters. It looks dangerous when opponents leave space to attack. The unanswered question is what happens when an opponent refuses to leave that space.
United’s biggest concern is not whether it can score. It is whether the club can maintain control when an opponent denies it space and turns the match into a physical battle for territory and second balls.

The issues, once United is unable to control the tempo, are the structural questions that the 5-2 scoreline could not fully answer. Ipswich eventually allowed United the conditions it wanted. Everton is less likely to do the same.
Everton’s manager, David Moyes, does not have to beat Manchester United at their own game. Everton can make the contest physical, direct and territorial. It can force United to deal with second balls, crosses, set pieces, and prolonged spells without the ball.
Everton’s physical style has historically caused problems for teams that prefer to control matches through possession and transitions. If Everton succeeds in denying United rhythm, the game becomes less about who has the better attackers and more about who handles the physical contest better.
There is an important contradiction on Everton’s side. Moyes has openly described his squad as “very small” after a frustrating transfer window. Iliman Ndiaye left for Manchester City in a deal worth £65m.
Beto departed for Fiorentina. The late attempt to sign Folarin Balogun collapsed after issues in his medical. That leaves Thierno Barry as Everton’s only recognized senior centre-forward. BBC Sport and The Athletic both reported Moyes’ frustration and the limited options left in attack.
On paper, Everton’s limited pressing options look like a clear advantage for United. In practice, it may push Moyes towards an even more structured approach. With limited individual attacking quality, Everton have fewer reasons to play an open, transition-based game. That could make them more difficult for United to unlock rather than easier.
Barry will be asked to hold the ball and give Everton an outlet. The rest of the team can then prioritise shape, physicality and set-piece threat. That is exactly the kind of contest that tests whether United can keep control when the game becomes uncomfortable.
The Ipswich win showed that United can score freely when conditions allow it. Manchester United vs Everton will show whether United can still control a match when conditions do not. If Everton succeeds in turning the game into a battle of territory, second balls and defensive discipline, United’s 5-2 result six days earlier may suddenly look less convincing.

If United can progress the ball cleanly, protect its back four and still create chances under pressure, it will be a stronger signal that Carrick’s side is moving in the right direction. That is the real test. Not whether United can score five again, but whether it can prevent the game from becoming the kind of contest that exposes the problems the Ipswich scoreline managed to hide.
