The Christian Gonzalez contract standoff with the New England Patriots is about to continue into the National Football League’s opening week, where the Patriots will kick off their season in a Super Bowl rematch against the Seattle Seahawks.
Gonzalez is in the penultimate year of his rookie deal and has quickly asserted himself as an elite cornerback. On ESPN’s Top 100 Players List, Gonzalez climbed the ranks to be number 35 before this year’s season kicks off. His postseason run was one of the best in the league since 2018, holding a completion percentage under 40 percent on 36 targets in four games played.
The Patriots’ postseason run ended in a Super Bowl LX 29-13 loss against the Seattle Seahawks. Gonzalez made four tackles in the loss but did not record any other stats, showcasing the Patriots’ lack of defense against an offense led by Sam Darnold and Jaxon Smith-Njigba.
The fourth-year cornerback is currently in negotiations with New England over an extension that would add to his $15 million deal. Gonzalez aims to be the highest-paid CB in the league, after Devon Witherspoon of the reigning champions Seahawks put pen to paper on a $132 million deal that completely reset the market. For what it’s worth, Witherspoon and Gonzalez share the same agent — Reggie Johnson.
Gonzalez has been a useful addition as the Patriots’ seventeenth pick in the 2023 NFL Draft. He then signed a $15 million rookie deal with the team and has since played in 34 regular-season games. Gonzalez missed the majority of his rookie year due to a torn labrum. In his young career, he’s amassed 145 tackles, a sack, and three interceptions. Gonzalez currently resides on the Patriots depth chart as their number one cornerback, but his status for this week is in question due to the negotiations.
Gonzalez’s trainer of three years, Christian White, recently said on 98.5 The Sports Hub, “I can just tell, he’s in good spirits, so he’s obviously hearing some good things. I wouldn’t be shocked if this gets done before the Seattle game.”
A new Christian Gonzalez contract lacks guarantees, according to NFL insiders, even though the total value exceeds Witherspoon’s deal. Patriots owner Robert Kraft even publicly declared that to the media, but has yet to see a signing that confirms his word. ESPN’s Adam Schefter is the main source claiming that the two sides are not close to an agreement.
“I’m still frustrated,” Gonzalez told the media in a locker room press conference. “Like I said a week ago, I got stuff to do. I’m focused on today, and this practice and doing what I gotta do.”
The young star has continued to practice in lieu of his contract status, and he still has two more seasons in New England since the Patriots picked up his fifth year team option in April. Unlike other defensive stars like Bengals’ Trey Hendrickson, Cowboys’ Micah Parsons and Buccaneers’ Vita Vea, Gonzalez’s willingness to play in training camp thus far has pointed to good signs regarding his status for Wednesday night. His focus on football has also pointed to good news regarding his extension, despite differing opinions from insiders and those close to Gonzalez.
