The Kimi Antonelli grid penalty will send Formula 1’s championship leader to the back of the grid at his home Italian Grand Prix, but it truly does not have to wreck his title push. Mercedes is taking a full new power unit at Monza after Antonelli went over his season allocation, choosing a track where overtaking is possible instead of risking another reliability issue later.
Antonelli comes in with six wins and a 59-point lead over both Mercedes teammate George Russell and Ferrari’s Lewis Hamilton. That is a serious cushion. Still, one bad Sunday could turn Monza from a smart way to a “limit damage” race into a very real championship story.
Mercedes team principal Toto Wolff made the team’s thinking very clear: “With Kimi, we’re taking the full thing.” Formula 1’s explanation of the decision says Mercedes chose Monza because of its long straights, overtaking chances and the need to protect Antonelli’s title run.
The FIA allows each driver three engines and three turbochargers, along with limited energy-store, control-electronics and MGU-K units. Mercedes has not yet publicly stated the exact individual component that put Antonelli over the limit, so there is no reason to guess. What is confirmed is that he exceeded the allocation and that Mercedes has dealt with power-unit reliability problems, including Antonelli’s retirement in Barcelona.
That is exactly why this is more of a calculated move, not a panic move. A fresh power unit now could be worth far more than a better starting spot at one race.
Antonelli also sounds more relaxed than frustrated. “I feel very free mentally going into this weekend,” he said in a Reuters interview from Monza.
The key is not whether Antonelli wins from the back. It is how many points he gives away if Russell or Hamilton wins.

A fifth- or sixth-place recovery would still be a win for Mercedes in the bigger picture. Antonelli would leave Monza with a lead above 40 points and a fresher power-unit pool for the races ahead.
The ugly scenario is a retirement or a finish outside the points while one of his two closest rivals wins. That would slice the gap to 34 points. It would not erase Antonelli’s advantage, but it would make the next round feel much different.
Monza is not Monaco. The long runs into the Rettifilio and Roggia chicanes give a fast car chances to pass, and Mercedes believes Antonelli’s fresh power unit can help him move through traffic.
Lewis Hamilton said sixth was achievable, while Reuters reported that Mercedes insiders see a top-five result as possible. That should be viewed as a realistic target, not a promise. Starting at the back always creates danger on lap one, where a broken front wing or bad strategy can ruin the entire plan.
There is precedent, though. Formula 1 noted that Isack Hadjar turned a pit-lane start into 10th place at Monza last season. Hamilton also climbed from the back to fifth there in 2022. Antonelli finished ninth at Monza as a rookie last year, but this is a far more confident driver than the one who arrived under pressure in 2025.
He is also the first Italian to lead the championship at Monza in 73 years. The crowd will be loud. The job is to ignore it and take the points that are there.
The FIA has declared a heat hazard for the weekend, with temperatures forecast above 31 degrees Celsius, it’s going to be a hot one. Teams must fit driver-cooling hardware, while drivers who do not use it accept a ballast trade-off.
That could make Antonelli’s recovery harder if he spends much of the race in dirty air, but it should not be treated as the reason this race swings the title. The points are the real story.
