Clemson’s starting quarterback competition is officially over, at least for now. Christopher Vizzina will be Clemson’s starting quarterback when the Tigers open the season against LSU in Baton Rouge. Vizzina earned the first opportunity after spending three years behind Cade Klubnik and holding off talented freshman Tait Reynolds throughout the offseason. Swinney made that clear when announcing the decision, saying Vizzina had earned the right to start. That does not mean Vizzina has earned an unlimited leash.
Swinney also said Reynolds has earned an opportunity and will likely play at some point against LSU. If Reynolds is already good enough to see meaningful action in Death Valley, he is good enough to keep pressure on Vizzina throughout the season. Dabo cannot allow this Clemson starting quarterback situation to become another version of what happened in 2022.
He also played well in his only career start. Vizzina completed 29 of 42 passes for 317 yards and three touchdowns against SMU last season. Vizzina deserves to start against LSU. He remained committed to Clemson, waited behind Klubnik and did enough during camp to win the competition.
Clemson lost that game, but Vizzina was not the primary reason. He demonstrated composure, made several impressive throws and kept the Tigers competitive despite receiving almost no help from the running game. That performance proved Vizzina is capable of leading Clemson’s offense. It did not prove that he should remain the starter regardless of how he performs this season.
Reynolds did not arrive at Clemson as an ordinary developmental quarterback. He possesses the athleticism, arm strength and natural ability to become the future of the position. Swinney described Reynolds as a gifted player with elite physical tools, including what he called a “rocket launcher” for an arm. That is not the description of a quarterback who should spend the entire season watching from the sideline if the offense struggles.
Vizzina has earned the first shot. He has not earned an unlimited leash, especially with a quarterback as talented as Reynolds waiting behind him.
This situation feels uncomfortably similar to Clemson’s 2022 quarterback controversy. DJ Uiagalelei entered that season as the experienced choice for Clemson’s starting quarterback while Klubnik was the highly touted freshman waiting behind him. Uiagalelei was not terrible for the entire season, but the warning signs became increasingly difficult to ignore.
Uiagalelei committed three turnovers against Syracuse before being benched. Klubnik entered the game and helped Clemson complete a comeback, but Swinney immediately reaffirmed Uiagalelei as his starter. Clemson’s offense then collapsed in a 35-14 loss to Notre Dame. Klubnik received another opportunity, threw an interception and was quickly returned to the bench.
Dabo continued defending Uiagalelei even after Clemson lost its College Football Playoff opportunity. Uiagalelei then struggled in a devastating 31-30 loss to South Carolina, completing only eight of his 29 passes. Despite everything that had happened, Uiagalelei started the ACC Championship Game against North Carolina.
Clemson finally made the permanent change after two empty possessions. Klubnik entered on the third series and completely transformed the offense, completing 20 of 24 passes while producing 309 total yards and two touchdowns in Clemson’s ACC Championship victory. He then went on to be Clemson’s starting quarterback in the following game, the Orange Bowl against Tennessee. The move proved to be the correct one. It was also painfully late.
Nobody can guarantee that Klubnik would have saved Clemson’s season if he had taken over earlier. He was still a freshman who made freshman mistakes, as his appearance against Notre Dame demonstrated. However, Clemson waited until its national championship hopes were gone before discovering what Klubnik could provide. That cannot happen again with Reynolds.
There is a difference between giving Reynolds a meaningful opportunity and placing him on the field for a predetermined package. If Reynolds enters against LSU, hands the ball off twice and attempts one pass, Clemson will not learn anything about its freshman quarterback. His opportunity needs to allow him to operate the offense and show whether he can move the football.
That does not mean Vizzina should be looking over his shoulder after every incompletion. He deserves time to settle into the position, especially while making only his second career start in one of college football’s most intimidating environments. The standard, however, must be higher than simply avoiding catastrophic mistakes.
Clemson is attempting to recover from a 7-6 season that left the Tigers outside the preseason AP Top 25. The Tigers cannot settle for an offense that is barely functional because the coaching staff wants to reward Vizzina for remaining patient and loyal.
If Vizzina plays well, Clemson’s starting quarterback job should remain his. If the offense repeatedly struggles and Reynolds provides a legitimate spark, Dabo must be willing to respond before the losses begin accumulating. That is where he failed in 2022. He remained committed to his original decision until Clemson had already lost the games that mattered most.
Swinney has earned more patience than almost any coach in college football. He led Clemson to two national championships, transformed the program and established a standard that once appeared impossible.
Those accomplishments cannot make him immune from the consequences of another disappointing season. Dabo has already been named among the college football coaches facing increased pressure in 2026, and mishandling the decision about Clemson’s starting quarterback again would only raise the temperature.
Clemson is coming off a 7-6 campaign and now faces one of the most important seasons of Dabo’s tenure. Another mediocre year would intensify the questions about whether he can return the Tigers to national relevance. Clemson chose continuity instead of pursuing an experienced quarterback through the transfer portal. Dabo placed his trust in Vizzina and Reynolds, which means correctly managing the two quarterbacks is now his responsibility.
His loyalty has always been one of his greatest strengths. It becomes a weakness when it prevents him from making an obvious change. If Vizzina struggles and Reynolds looks ready, Dabo cannot spend another season defending the depth chart while Clemson’s goals disappear. Repeating the mistake he made with Uiagalelei would not merely cost Clemson another season. It could help cost Dabo Swinney his job.
Christopher Vizzina earned the opportunity to start against LSU. His patience, experience and performance against SMU make him the correct choice to lead Clemson into the season. Being the correct choice in Week 1 does not guarantee that he will remain the correct choice in Week 5.
Dabo waited too long to make a permanent quarterback change in 2022. By the time Klubnik received control of the offense, Clemson had already lost its opportunity to accomplish something meaningful nationally. He cannot make that mistake again.
Vizzina deserves a fair chance to establish himself as the Clemson starting quarterback, but his leash must be shorter than the one Uiagalelei received. If Reynolds proves that he gives Clemson a better chance to win, Dabo must make the change before another season slips away.
