The Dallas Cowboys had one of the most disappointing seasons in the NFL. After some all-in push, they failed to make the NFL playoffs this year. One of the big questions in the aftermath of the season is “Who Will be the head coach for next season?”. Mike McCarthy’s contract was expiring and many wondered if he was going to stay or test free agency. Well, we got our answer, Mike McCarthy will not be coming back next season, and his contract has expired.

My Reaction To Mike McCarthy Not Coming Back

My immediate reaction to this move is best described in two words, “Too Late”. McCarthy should have been fired immediately after that playoff game against the Packers last year. It made zero sense that Jerry Jones decided to keep him, with how unprepared Dallas was for a 7th-seeded Green Bay Packers team. There was no blame placed on injuries, it was solely on the coach who made bizarre coaching decisions. Even rewatching that game, Dallas quit on the coach, and that continued this season, with Dak even saying on the sidelines “We Suck” in front of the coach. There are some losses where coaches don’t recover, and that 48-32 loss against Green Bay in the playoffs was a clear-cut example.

I am not surprised Jerry didn’t fire him after that game, after all, he kept Jason Garrett as the head coach for 9.5 seasons. That dude was so over his head as the coach, and should have been fired 5 years previously. I have no idea how Garrett managed to keep that job as long as he did. With how this season ended for Dallas, it would have been a bad idea to extend McCarthy, both sides benefit by no extension being reached here.

Where McCarthy Could Be Hired Next

McCarthy does have teams interested in his services, which isn’t a surprise, as it isn’t common for a Super Bowl winning coach to be a free agent in the NFL. Three teams have expressed interest in him. The Chicago Bears had an interview set for him until Dallas denied the request. Expect him to have his interview with them soon. Another team he has been linked to is the New Orleans Saints, as there have been growing rumors that they want to speak with him. Heck, there have been links to him joining the New York Jets and reuniting with Aaron Rodgers. Time will tell what happens with McCarthy

As for Dallas, let’s see who they are bringing in to interview as their top candidate. Deion Sanders!?!?!? Never Change Jerry, never change at all. This has disaster written all over it, knowing the tremendous egos both Deion and Jerry have. Also, if Deion does this, it just shows he is a tremendous hypocrite, as he publicly in a 60-minute interview stated he would never coach in the NFL ever unless his sons are with him. This just shows how desperate Jerry is after the all-in push failed, and how money can talk for Deion to accept the interview.

Now it will be interesting to see how Jerry replaces McCarthy as the head coach. The question is, can Cowboys fans trust Jerry to make the right decision? After his failed “all in” push, the answer to that is unclear, and will only be solved in time. He won’t get Bill Belichick after agreeing to join UNC next season, so the Cowboys will have to choose a different option.
