Championship experience could be critical for the Thunder as they attempt to navigate their way back to the NBA Finals and potentially win their second championship in three seasons.
Injuries were a major factor in Oklahoma City’s Western Conference Finals loss. The Thunder were without star Jalen Williams and key role player Ajay Mitchell during the series against San Antonio.
Those injuries proved pivotal as Oklahoma City struggled to score against the Spurs after taking a 3-2 series lead. The Thunder ultimately lost the series in seven games, including two blowout losses on the road.
Next season represents a fresh opportunity. With better health, the Thunder have plenty of reasons to be optimistic about their chances of making another championship run.

The Spurs ultimately came up short against the NBA champion New York Knicks, but their Finals appearance should not discredit what they accomplished throughout the playoffs.
San Antonio shocked the NBA last season by winning 62 games, eliminating the defending 2025 champion Thunder, and advancing to the 2026 NBA Finals.
Led by All-Stars Victor Wembanyama and De’Aaron Fox, the Spurs lost the Finals in five games to the Knicks. However, the experience gained throughout that postseason run could prove valuable moving forward.
San Antonio learned important lessons while gaining valuable experience as a young team. Although the Spurs fell three wins short of a championship, their postseason run could ultimately make them stronger and hungrier for future success.
The Spurs’ future success will largely depend on the continued development of rising stars Stephon Castle and Dylan Harper.
Devin Vassell and Julian Champagnie will also need to continue developing into reliable role players. The addition of Tobias Harris provides San Antonio with another experienced veteran who could help the young Spurs take another step forward.
The Spurs should enter the season with plenty of confidence after proving many people wrong during their surprising run to the Finals.
San Antonio’s young core now has the experience of playing on the NBA’s biggest stage. If Wembanyama and the rest of the roster continue to develop, the Spurs could once again challenge for the Western Conference crown.
The franchise is aiming to win its first championship of the Victor Wembanyama era and its first title since 2014.

It is difficult to separate the two teams at this point. Both have legitimate championship aspirations and the potential to represent the Western Conference in the NBA Finals once again.
