Liverpool’s teams have won a total of eight FA Cups and reached other finals. They are FA Cup giants that usually make it to the quarter and semi-finals with regularity. The Reds have had some cracking games in the cup. These are some of the greatest Liverpool FA Cup matches in history.
In 1986, the Merseyside clubs were dominating. Liverpool had pipped Everton to the league title, and both teams made it to the FA Cup final. Both had great teams, but there could be just one winner in the Wembley final.
In the first half, Everton came out of the blocks and were the better team for much of the first hour. However, they still lead by just one goal after the interval.
When the teams came out in the second half, the game turned when Rush equalized with just over 30 minutes to play. Five minutes later, Liverpool were in front. During the closing minutes, Rush scored a second goal to make the final score Liverpool 3, Everton 1. The triumph sealed a historic double for Liverpool.
When Liverpool took on Arsenal in the 2001 cup final, they were chasing a treble. The Reds had already won the League Cup and UEFA Cup before they played in the cup final. In that game, they came up against a strong Arsenal team that included Henry, Bergkamp, Vieira, and co.
The Gunners dominated much of the first half but could not score a goal. Liverpool were clinging on and were fortunate that a penalty was not given to Arsenal when one of their defenders blocked a shot on the goal-line with the arm. The penalty was not given, and the game remained 0-0 at the interval.
In the second half, Arsenal opened the scoring when Ljungberg rounded the goalkeeper and fired in to make the score 1-0. That goal seemed to have won them the cup, but in the final 10 minutes, Owen equalized. In the dying minutes, the striker fired in a low strike that beat the Arsenal goalkeeper at the far post. That goal ensured a 2-1 victory for the Reds and sealed a cup treble.
This was a classic 2006 Liverpool FA Cup final against West Ham. The Reds went into the game as favourites, but the Hammers had the better of the first half. During that half, they scored twice to establish a 2-0 lead. Liverpool pulled one back, but West Ham remained 2-1 in front at half-time.
After the interval, Gerrard equalized for Liverpool. West Ham restored their lead with a third goal that put them 3-2 up. They held the lead into the dying minutes before Gerrard rattled in a fantastic strike from approximately 35 yards.
The late equalizer took the game into extra time. During that period, neither team could score a decisive fourth goal. The final went to a penalty shoot-out in which West Ham netted just one of their penalties. Consequently, Liverpool lifted the FA Cup.
Another classic Liverpool FA Cup game came in their 1977 semi-final with Everton. During this semi-final, Liverpool went in front twice. However, Everton also equalized Liverpool’s first and second goals, making the score 2-2. In the dying minutes, Everton seemed to have scored a winning third goal, but the referee ruled it out.
That ensured that the semi-final was replayed. During that game, Liverpool ran out 3-0 winners in the Merseyside derby. However, Liverpool were still beaten in the FA Cup final.
Those are a few of the classic Liverpool FA Cup games for the Reds faithful to remember. In those games, the Reds won three more trophies and secured a triple and double. They were also thrilling matches that had plenty of twists and turns.
