Following the Myles Garrett trade, the NFL community has rightfully lost its mind over the superteam that is the LA Rams. This tweet from Benjamin Solak directly addresses the absurdity of the Rams roster:

The Rams’ Elite Stars At Key Positions

Addressing this tweet on the Rams front, it is arguable whether Matthew Stafford is truly a top-5 quarterback (I would say he’s not; I have Mahomes, Lamar, Allen, Herbert, Maye above him), but what is not arguable is that he just won MVP and is elite. Puka is a consensus top-5 receiver, and Adams isn’t too far behind. Myles Garrett is top 1, no argument. They traded for Mcduffie, who is widely regarded as at least a top 10 CB and was first-team All-Pro in 2023. As far as tackles go, the Rams don’t have stars there, but Alaric Jackson and Warren McClendon Jr. are both good anchors to the Rams’ offensive line.

This Rams team is also the first team to roster both the MVP and the DPOY from the previous season. Oh, and they might get Aaron Donald back. And was wondering if any teams in the past had the same embarrassment of riches.

The Comparison To The 2007 Patriots

So naturally, I looked at the 2007 Patriots first. They had the MVP & OPOY at QB in Tom Brady. They had two all-pros at Wide Receiver with 1st team all-pro and OPOY runner-up Randy Moss and 2nd team all-pro Wes Welker. At Left Tackle they had all-pro 1st team Matt Light. At “Edge” (not really but 3-4 OLB) they had 1st team all-pro Mike Vrabel, who also finished 5th in DPOY voting. At Cornerback they had 1st team all-pro Asante Samuel. They rounded out their star-studded roster with 2nd team all-pro nose tackle Vince Wilfork and 3-time 1st team all-pro Defensive End Richard Seymour (AP-1 ‘03-‘05).

So in short, the 2007 Patriots pass this “star at most important positions” marker, and then some. If the Rams get Aaron Donald back (big assumption) here’s the comparison between the ‘07 Patriots and current Rams:

‘07 Patriots: HC Bill Belichick, QB Tom Brady, WR Randy Moss, WR Wes Welker, LT Matt Light, OLB Mike Vrabel, CB Asante Samuel, NT Vince Wilfork

‘26 Rams: HC Sean Mcvay, QB Matthew Stafford, WR Puka Nacua, Wr Davante Adams, LT Alaric Jackson, EDGE Myles Garrett, CB Trent Mcduffie, DT Aaron Donald.

End Of My Rams Rant

You can definitely argue that the Rams have the better side here (I wouldn’t), and that’s saying a lot considering how great that Patriots team was. Given the nature of football, it is unlikely that the Rams will repeat the Patriots’ undefeated regular season, but they certainly look the part, unlike any team since then.

Part of what made the Patriots’ 2007 season so special is that they remained healthy, which is not a guarantee for the current Rams. This same Patriots roster suffered due to an injury to Tom Brady in 2008, which took them from 16-0 to 11-5 and missing the playoffs. In today’s NFL, 11 wins will get you into the playoffs almost no matter what but the point still stands that one injury could remove the superteam status from the Rams.

Beyond that, it’s important to remember that the 2007 Patriots did lose to a far inferior team on paper in the Giants. The games still need to be played, and on any given Sunday, anyone can beat anyone. Just because the Rams probably should win every game this year, that doesn’t mean they will.
