The 2025 Georgia Bulldogs have been renowned for the comeback; they have won four games this season that necessitated late, thrilling turnarounds. The previous week, Georgia once again looked dead to rights against the Florida Gators and found a way to steal victory from the jaws of defeat. Early against Mississippi State, it appeared like more of the same was in store, but the Dawgs played one of their best all-around games of the season, winning 41-21.
Quarterback Gunner Stockton entered the season, seen by many insiders as the team’s greatest question mark. He looked like a game manager when filling in for Carson Beck last season, and those labels stuck with Stockton. They ignored the dynamic multi-purpose talent that he was recruited for, and which he has elevated the program with.
Stockton, after a slow start, has become a dark horse Heisman Trophy candidate. He likely won’t win it, but he has played himself into a position to be named a finalist, especially with his gripping late-game heroics. On Saturday, against Mississippi State, he didn’t need dramatics, but he shone nevertheless.
Georgia, once again, as it has throughout the 2025 campaign, fell behind early. The defense failed to get any resistance against quarterback Kamario Taylor, who drove his team down the field with ease. Mississippi State crafted a 14-play, 75-yard drive, and Taylor ran in from four yards for the score.
Stockton led his team to scores on six of the team’s next seven possessions, mixing a strong run game with exceptional passing to turn a seven-point deficit into a 38-7 lead. He threw three touchdown passes to three different receivers, setting up an explosive running attack led by Nate Frazier. Head Coach Kirby Smart has pushed for balance and to own the line of scrimmage; he got that on Saturday afternoon in a difficult road environment.
Stockton is a humble individual from the small town of Tiger, Georgia. He plays as if the moment doesn’t faze him and stays grounded in who he is. His teammates adore him, and team chemistry is a marked improvement from last year, when it seemed as if Carson Beck’s mind was always somewhere else.
The Dawgs have gotten off to slow starts because the defense has failed to get to the quarterback. It has been an acute problem in the first half until Smart’s adjustments take effect. Solving the issue has become a Georgia mission, and what was displayed at Davis Wade Stadium offers encouragement.
Mississippi State has been one of the SEC’s most explosive offenses, especially at home. After their opening drive, they looked like they would put up another 30 to 40 points on the board. Smart’s message, practice work during the week, and adjustments took effect.
Georgia collected three sacks, getting two in the first quarter to stem Taylor’s momentum. Confidence expanded, and the Dawgs played outstanding defense, holding Mississippi State scoreless until the game was well in hand.
The defensive corps kept the passing attack under 200 yards and held the running game to a pedestrian 3.5 yards per carry. It is no surprise that one of Georgia’s greatest efforts in getting to the quarterback led to a magnificent all-around performance. The defense must build off this and consistently bring it.
The Dawgs’ running attack struggled early in the season as the offensive line worked to find its identity after much offseason turnover. The running game is now operating as a well-oiled machine. On Saturday, they dominated Mississippi State with 303 ground yards and two touchdowns, an outstanding 6.9 yards per carry.
Frazier orchestrated excellence as he led his running mates with a magnificent 181 yards and a touchdown. He scored from 59 yards out and gave Georgia firm control of the contest. He teamed with Stockton to keep drives churning down the field, and Mississippi State showed no ability to stop it.
Smart looked for a running back to step up; he now has his bellcow. Frazier is running with confidence, expecting to take it to the house on each touch. He is in sync with his blocking mates, and it has turned a Georgia offense once full of questions into one of the game’s best.
Georgia is now 8-1 overall and 6-1 in the SEC. Their final conference game awaits next week as they host the overhyped and desperate Texas Longhorns in an evening showdown between the hedges. Texas has played better after a sluggish start, winning its last four contests, including victories over two top ten opponents.
The Dawgs must bring the excellent all-around game that they showed at Davis Wade on Saturday, and which they have been building towards all season. The Longhorns have raised their recruiting to the likes of the Alabama Crimson Tide and Georgia, so talent-wise, they can beat anyone. Coaching and confidence may be issues, though, and it will behoove the Dawgs to get off to a strong start to create doubt.
Last season, in a thorough domination on the road against Texas, Georgia brought nonstop pressure. They must do so again and make Archie Manning uncomfortable while raising the fan intensity.
Stockton and Frazier are now a dynamic duo that defenses are ill-equipped to stop. They have a great opportunity to close the SEC regular season in style in Athens and give Georgia enthusiasts much to scream about. Smart has been working relentlessly to get this into place, and now it is time to reap the rewards. The elements are set for a dynamic closing run to capture a coveted playoff spot.
