How about the Cowboys? What a great way to go, huh? Jerry Jones. After so much hype, guess what? They didn’t even make it to the playoffs this season. The 2024 Dallas Cowboys will go down as one of the biggest disappointments in the franchise’s history. There is so much that went wrong for this team, but from the bunch, there are 3 that stood out.
It still makes zero sense that the Cowboys decided to enter this season with Mike McCarthy as the head coach. Especially with how poorly coached and unprepared they were in that playoff game last year against the Green Bay Packers. Those are losses that coaches and teams don’t recover from, but Jerry Jones decided not to. Guess what happened this year? More and more games were lost due to awful coaching decisions and it’s clear this team has quit on the coach.
McCarthy’s contract expires at the end of this season, and Jerry shouldn’t renew it. The team is not going to win with McCarthy as the coach, and it needs a new voice in the locker room.
Say what you want about Dak Prescott, their season was all but over when Dak suffered his Hamstring injury. The Quarterback is the most important position in the NFL and with Dak’s injury, the Cowboys had no chance. It didn’t help that the entire team quit the entire from that point on. Cooper Rush is a solid QB, but he isn’t a dependable full-time starter. It stuns me that Dallas hasn’t given Trey Lance to start. What a great idea that was trading a 4th round pick and not using him once so far.
Remember when Jerry Jones once claimed that he was going all in on this season? The transactions this team made were the opposite of all in. The only notable additions they made this offseason were LB Eric Kendricks and RB Ezekiel Elliot. Eric Kendricks has panned out, but the problem was the Cowboys had no depth on defense and it showed when Micah Parsons and Trevon Diggs got injured. Ezekiel Elliot is awful and is clearly past his prime in the NFL. The Cowboys had no great option at running back. The Cowboys supposed “all-in’ was a complete disaster.
Wait there’s more. Remember the NFL Trade deadline? Well, the Dallas Cowboys decided to go in further and get another receiver to bolster the team. Who did the Cowboys trade for, WR Jonathan Mingo who has been a tremendous bust as a former 2nd-round pick. The Cowboys paid a 4th round pick for him, and he’s mainly done cardio as a Cowboy. At least he hasn’t been a wasted 1st round pick like Mazi Smith has been for Dallas. Dear god, what a waste of a pick he has been for the team.
Normally when anyone lists a kicker to be the best in the league, the usual name that gets thrown is Baltimore Ravens Kicker Justin Tucker. Well, not this year, as Tucker has not looked like himself this season and has shown signs of decline. In my opinion, Brandon Aubrey is the best kicker in the NFL this year. An argument can be made for Pittsburgh Steelers kicker Chris Boswell, but he hasn’t made multiple 60-yard or more kicks. He has made all of his extra-point kicks this season and 36 of his 42 field goals. The Cowboys got something with Aubrey and if he keeps kicking this well next season, he will get a pay upgrade.
