The Brazil national team has had some of the best soccer sides in history. Brazil’s soccer teams have had plenty of great soccer players and won a record number of World Cups from 1958 to 2002. These are some of the greatest Brazilian soccer players to grace the game.
Pele was the golden boy of Brazilian soccer. His presence in the Brazilian soccer team turned a good side into world champions. In the 1958 World Cup, Pele made his World Cup debut and scored some notable goals in the semi-finals and final against Sweden, contributing to a 5-2 victory for the Brazilian team. Pele would also win the World Cup with Brazil in 1962 and then his final World Cup in 1970. Here, Pele inspired Brazil to a 4-1 victory in the final against Italy, where he scored one of the goals.
At the club level, Pele remained loyal to Santos for most of his career, during which he won numerous titles. Overall, for club and country, Pele scored over 1,000 goals. Pele was one of the greatest Brazilian soccer players of the 20th century, perhaps the best to play for the Samba Kings at least.
By the end of the 1990s, Ronaldo was one of the top players in the world, and perhaps the best striker. He first emerged with PSV, where Ronaldo scored almost a goal a game in the Dutch soccer league. He then joined Barcelona, where his prolific scoring record continued. Ronaldo would go on to win the UEFA Cup Winners’ Cup with Barcelona. A then world record transfer of 19m saw Ronaldo move to Inter Milan.
At the international level, Ronaldo featured prominently in the 1998 World Cup, where he reached the final with the Brazil team. He scored eight goals in the 2002 FIFA World Cup to lift the trophy for Brazil. Ronaldo’s pace, dribbling, and finishing were truley renowned.
Romario was a great Brazilian soccer forward who spearheaded the 1994 Brazil team. In the 1994 World Cup, he scored five goals for Brazil, one in five of Brazil’s games. This Brazilian team won the FIFA World Cup, largely thanks to Romario’s play. Romario also won the FIFA World Cup Golden Ball, voted as player of the tournament.
Aside from this, Romario also played for numerous soccer clubs, most notably Barcelona. Romario was a key player for Cruyff’s Barcelona teams, which dominated Spanish soccer.
Jairzinho was key player in Brazil’s triumphant 1970 World Cup side. Along with Pele, he was one of the best players in this World Cup and scored the most goals for the Samba Kings in that tournament, including a goal in the final. Jairzinho played 81 games for Brazil.
Garrincha was a great Brazilian soccer player with terrific ball skills. Few defenders could handle Garrincha’s sensational dribbling and speed. With Brazil, he won the World Cup twice and scored two goals in the 1958 World Cup final. Brazil didn’t miss Pele much in the 1962 World Cup, which Brazil won thanks to Garrincha, who was voted player of the tournament.
Didi was a fine midfield player who was great with set pieces and free kicks. Didi won the World Cup with Brazil in 1958 and 1962. At the club level, Didi played for Real Madrid as a big contributor to the squad.
Zico never won the FIFA World Cup, but was still one of Brazil’s finest playmakers. Zico was the World Soccer Player of the Year in 1983, per World Soccer. Zico also won the World Club Cup in the early 1980s when playing for Flamengo.
Those great Brazilian players played some fantastic soccer. None were defenders, as Brazil tends to have better players in the more forward positions. With fine ball skills, these players starred for the Brazil national team, as well as club teams.
