With the MLB draft quickly approaching on July 13th, the Phillies will look to hit on the 26th overall pick. In the past ten years, the Philadelphia Phillies have had their ups and downs in selecting in the first round of the MLB draft. From all-stars to players that never made it to the Major Leagues, this is a look back at the Phillies’ first-round picks.
Nori was selected 27th overall by the Phillies last season. The speedy high school outfielder went higher than expected and has not produced at a very high level in his first full year in the minor leagues. Nori is slashing .260/.349/.342 in 74 games at Clearwater this season. He has used his speed to steal 19 bases on 23 attempts.
Nori is currently Philadelphia’s eighth-ranked prospect according to MLB Pipeline. It still has not been decided whether or not this pick was a hit, but it is not trending in the right direction.
Miller fell to pick 27 in 2023 due to a hand injury. He has turned out to be quite a steal for the Phillies. Miller has performed well in his minor league career and has shown high potential. Even in a “down year” this year, his career stats have him slashing .257/.367/.417 with 18 homers and 58 stolen bases.
Miller has been ranked highly by many, coming in as the MLB’s 22nd-ranked prospect this season. Still not enough time to fully decide on this pick, but it seems like Philadelphia made the right choice with Miller.
Crawford comes from strong genes; his father, Carl Crawford, was an MLB player for 15 years and a four-time All-Star. Crawford has had a good minor league career. With a .826 OPS, he can get on base and produce. Crawford is MLB’s 49th-ranked prospect and has been climbing each season.
Crawford is expected to be nearing a promotion to the big leagues soon, and he’s earned it. The Crawford pick seems like a solid one that can produce at a position of need right now.
Painter is Philadelphia’s prized possession. He has been labeled as untouchable in all trade conversations, and rightfully so. Despite his struggles coming back from Tommy John surgery, he is still viewed as their future ace. Producing at a high level in his first season in the minors, he has a 2.49 ERA and 231 strikeouts in 166.1 innings pitched.
Painters’ ability has not gone unnoticed; he is a consensus Top 10 prospect by everyone in the sport. The Phillies aced this pick and may have found their future ace as well.
Abel made his MLB Debut earlier this year and was great vs the Pittsburgh Pirates. He had an up-and-down minor league career that had him going from a top 50 prospect in the league to dropping out of the top 100. His inconsistencies with his command have returned in his last couple of outings.
Abel has since been sent to Triple-A. Overall, he has likely done enough to be considered a successful pick for now. His prospect status carries this a lot, and if he continues his unsuccessful start to his MLB career, he may lose that tag.
Stott was selected 14th overall in the 2019 draft. He peaked in MLB prospect rankings inside the top 50, at 46 in 2022. He has experienced a downward trend in his performance over the past two seasons. The Phillies still have high belief in Stott, and with his elite defense at second base and his performance in the 2023 season, it is clear why.
Stott had some success earlier this year in the leadoff spot, but that quickly diminished. There still has to be hope that Stott can return to his high-level performance, and with that in mind, this pick can be considered decent. He isn’t going to be a superstar, but that’s not expected. He just needs to be a good role-player on a contending team.
Bohm is the singular pick here that has turned out to be an all-star. Many inconsistencies have defined his career, but at his peak, he is a good third baseman. His power has still never been seen, but the contact has been getting back to where he is at his best. His line-to-line approach at the plate makes him a doubles machine at his peak.
Considering Bohm has been an all-star, the pick has to be considered a success. Likely the best selection out of the ones that have already reached their potential. The Phillies appear to have their third baseman locked down for the near future.
Haseley was selected eighth overall in 2017, and this is where the trouble starts. His career already seems to be over after only 158 games. The once highly thought of prospect never turned out to be anything more than a bust.
Haseley only played in parts of three seasons with the Phillies and did not have a single good year. Although the worst is still to come, Haseley has been the complete opposite of a good pick. A terrible one.
Moniak played less than 50 games for the Phillies after being the number one overall pick in 2016. With few good players emerging from the first round, they get a bit of leeway here. Unlike Haseley, Moniak has managed to continue his career in Colorado. He is currently in the middle of one of his best seasons as a pro, but that is not saying much.
Moniak is an absolutely terrible selection at number one overall. With it being impossible to sugarcoat this one, he is a bust. If the Phillies ever receive the first pick again, they can’t let this happen, as it is a recipe for complete disaster.
Randolph was picked tenth overall in 2015. That is the highlight of his MLB career, as a matter of fact, it is the only highlight. He never managed to make it to the major leagues and last played in the minors in 2022.
Randolph never played in the MLB, so the pick can’t be considered anything other than a disastrous miss. His career is over before it ever started, and after being the tenth pick, that is just unacceptable.
The Phillies have not been able to find a star in the draft since Aaron Nola in 2014. There are still a couple of players in the minor leagues who have the potential to change that. Their careers will ultimately decide whether Philadelphia was successful in drafting in the past ten years.
