Charlotte FC has had a turbulent season, starting near the top of the Eastern Conference at the beginning of the year to barely hanging on in playoff contention. One of the biggest problems they’ve faced is a lack of consistency in the back and slow movement in the front. News that the team could be signing away current top goal scorer Patrick Agyemang has some fans worried that the season could continue to go downhill.
Charlotte first signed Agyemang in 2023, as the 12th overall selection in that year’s SuperDraft. He had his breakout season with the club last year, featuring in 36 matches with the first team and scoring a team-high ten goals and five assists. He’s also responsible for helping send Charlotte to their first-ever playoff match victory. He’s already inching closer to last year’s numbers, recording six goals and one assist so far this season. His popularity is also growing, with MLS recently announcing that he’s in the top 25 players in kit sales.
Despite his short career, Agyemang’s early success with Charlotte has fans critical of his failures. The 24-year-old forward is a big threat on the pitch, constantly being covered by defenders. That attention has turned into a lot of turnovers and missed opportunities for shots that looked easy to make. Though he continues to have critics, Agyemang’s success speaks for itself, sending him to the international stage.
Agyemang was picked to be a part of the U.S. Men’s National Team before the start of the 2025 season. He has since been called up with his teammate, Tim Ream, on several occasions. Most notably, the recent Concacaf Gold Cup group stage matches. Agyemang has faced several missed opportunities, but was able to help bring success to the team during their last match against Haiti. He’s expected to continue his time with the team, with team leaders pointing out his early success as a good omen for the future.
Fans knew offers for Agyemang’s transfer were bound to come up as the summer transfer window opened. Right now, several teams are showing some interest in the forward. There are two specific clubs overseas that are showing more interest than others. The first major name is Derby County FC. Derby currently competes in the EFL Championship, and was part of the Premier League most recently during the 2007 – 2008 season. It’s also the team that defender Nathan Byrne transferred from in 2022.
Another Championship team looking at Agyemang is Ipswich Town. Ipswich were in the Premier League last season but ended the year getting relegated to Championship. They’ve also just transferred their star forward, Liam Delap, to Chelsea. The team will need to fill that position soon if they want any chance at getting promoted back to the top league.
Just because teams are showing interest in Agyemang doesn’t mean that Charlotte are required to let the forward go. This isn’t even the first time another club has shown interest. Charlotte previously rejected a bid from Luton Town this past winter, with plans to hold his contract until at least the summer window opened. If they were to release Agyemang, Charlotte could use the resources acquired by that transfer to bring in more attacking talent and fill in the currently open DP spot. A final decision surrounding the fate of Charlotte’s front line when the transfer window opens on July 24.
MLS teams can’t have natural, homegrown talent like Agyemang and not expect to get some transfer offers. While soccer is growing in popularity in the States, the U.S. isn’t known for creating the most successful players. That can push young talent to other leagues overseas. An obvious example would be Christian Pulisic, whose talent allowed him to start his career with Dortmund as a teen. Former New York Red Bulls midfielder Tyler Adams is another perfect example, as he now plays with the Premier League’s Bournemouth.
If Charlotte does transfer Agyemang, they’ll need to do a lot of work to get another forward ready to take over his position. The club isn’t sitting in the best spot, with only 25 points in the season and ninth in the Eastern Conference standings. If they do keep Agyemang, the team still needs to find a way to give him better opportunities that lead to successful matches.
