The Pittsburgh Steelers recently addressed their quarterback woes by signing veteran QB Aaron Rodgers. Following his departure from the New York Jets, Rodgers pondering between signing with the Vikings, the Giants, and the Steelers. Ultimately, he will suit up for the yellow and black in 2025, and this acquisition alone will thrust the Steelers into a much better spot for making a run at the Super Bowl.

The Steelers Already Have A Well-Rounded Roster

Superstars T.J. Watt and Cameron Heyward.

As far as positional groups go for Pittsburgh, it’s pretty impressive to say they really have no holes on their roster.

Veteran Cameron Heyward, the currently-frustrated T.J. Watt, and young bucks Keanu Benton and Derrick Harmon occupy their pass rush. Additionally, the Steelers added Ohio State star Jack Sawyer to their roster via the 2025 NFL draft this past April.

Their inside linebacker room is filthy; Patrick Queen is alongside Payton Wilson, while Alex Highsmith takes reps as well.

After acquiring Darius Slay this past offseason, their defensive back room is also loaded. Young star Joey Porter Jr. has started to impress early, and free safety Minkah Fitzpatrick has etched his name as a top-five safety in the league for the past decade.

As far as offense goes, there are a few questions, but also an incredible amount of upside. Almost immediately after departing with George Pickens, the Steelers filled their gap at wide receiver by acquiring star D.K. Metcalf from the Seahawks.

He is set to play alongside the young Roman Wilson, who has questions swirling about how effective he will be coming off a season-ending injury in 2024. Also in the WR core is Robert Woods, Calvin Austin III and the speedy veteran Scotty Miller. Their starpower besides Metcalf is questionable, but if they can prove to be effective as a group, they could be one of the best cores in the league.

At running back, the Steelers have two seemingly reliable options, the first being their tried-and-true powerhouse back, Jaylen Warren. Since 2022, Warren has been splitting snaps with Najee Harris, but since Harris left for the Chargers, Warren is set to see an increased workload.

The other option at running back for the Steelers is Iowa State rookie Kaleb Johnson. Johnson was electric in college ball, which led to him being selected by Pittsburgh with the 83rd pick in the 2025 NFL draft. These two backs are both eager to impress, and that competition should foster a successful running game for Pittsburgh.

The tight end position is anchored down by the ol’ reliable Pat Freiermuth. His steady hands and impressive blocking ability have been coveted by the carousel of Steelers quarterbacks for years now, and he will be equally coveted this upcoming season.

The Steelers also boast a decent offensive line, which is arguably one of the most underrated lines in the league. Youngsters Broderick Jones and Troy Fautanu play left and right tackle, respectively. The left guard spot is occupied by Issac Seumulo, and their right guard is Mason McCormick. While they may not be household names, the group was effective in 2024 despite injuries. Although they were ranked 20th per Sharp Football Analysis, they showed promising flashes for a young line.

Lastly, steering the Steeler ship in 2025 will be Aaron Rodgers at quarterback. He had a rocky two years with the New York Jets, riddled with injuries and inconsistent play. Nevertheless, his presence was highly sought after during the off-season, and the Steelers won the Rodgers sweepstakes. If he can play 75% as good as he used to in Green Bay, the Black and Gold are in for a treat.

Beating The .500 Hump

Steelers Head Coach Mike Tomlin.
Steelers head coach Mike Tomlin is often critiqued for his lack of playoff success.

Steelers fans know where this is going just based off of the headline and the image.

Mike Tomlin has been a prominent coach in the NFL for over 20 years. After garnering experience with the Tampa Bay Buccaneers and the Minnesota Vikings as a coordinator/DB coach, Tomlin was hired by Pittsburgh in 2007, and he has been their head coach ever since.

His 18-year tenure with the Steelers is impressive alone, but the following stat is arguably even more impressive.

In his 18-year head coaching career, Mike Tomlin has never been below .500. Some years, the team has been better than .500, and other years, they have fallen directly at .500.

People often critique Tomlin for “not being able to make it past the first round,” but this critique is entirely ludicrous. Since joining the Steelers in 2007, Tomlin has led the Steelers to 12 playoff appearances, three AFC championship games, two Super Bowl appearances, and even a Super Bowl victory in 2009. To say that he doesn’t have what it takes to win a Super Bowl is an outlandish statement, given the fact that he already has proved that he can.

This year, things are a bit different for Pittsburgh. Granted, their AFC North division is tough; powerhouse teams like the Bengals and the Ravens won’t go down easily, if at all. Even if they can’t clinch the division, though, the changes made to the playoff bracket in recent years would allow them to still contend in the playoffs even if they were second or third place.

With a few new faces, a strong group of returning young players, and a finally stable QB situation, Steelers fans should be ecstatic for 2025.

End Of My Steelers Rant

Pittsburgh Steelers 2024.
Will the Steelers contend for a ring this year?

Whether or not the Steelers will be contenders this year is completely up to them; they have the talent to compete with anyone in the league, they just need to put their minds together to accomplish the tasks. The beginning of the year could be sticky while new faces are just starting to build chemistry together, but in due time, the Steelers are ready to shock NFL fans across the globe.
