Today is a difficult day for professional wrestling fans as the fanbase lost a phenomenal professional wrestler. Especially one of the most popular during the peak of ECW. Professional wrestler Sabu passed away today at the age of 60 years old. The news was first reported by PW Insider and as of this writing, Sabu’s cause of death has not been revealed.
This came as a shock as not a few weeks ago had a retirement match against the “Bad Boy” Joey Janela in GCW during his Spring Break 9 show. He even did multiple convention shows at the time and seemed to be in decent health. With the bumps he took and having a busy convention tour, it was shocking to hear this news. The crazy part is that the match almost didn’t happen. Janela was recovering from his bicep injury and was not 100%. Janela came back a few months early just to even have the match. It’s great he did and gave Sabu one last match before he passed.
The one thing that stands out with Sabu is how tough this man was in the ring. He legit tore his bicep and taped it in the middle of a match with Terry Funk to finish it. If that doesn’t define the word tough, what does? Heck, Sabu throughout his career dealt with a broken neck, hip, jaw, multiple scars on his body, etc. It’s a miracle he continued to wrestle even with his body being so beaten up. This man was dedicated to his craft in the ring, and there was a reason he was called the ‘Suicidal, Homicidal, Genocidal, Death-Defying Maniac’.
He wrestled with so many different promotions throughout his career. The ones that come to mind are ECW, AJPW, NJPW, WCW, WWE, TNA, FMW, AAA, and multiple other independent circuit promotions. Heck, he even had a brief appearance in AEW as the enforcer to the Adam Cole and Chris Jericho match at Double or Nothing in 2023. He had a 40-year career in professional wrestling and always had a memorable moment everywhere he worked.
That Dark Side of the Ring episode on “The Sheik,” Ed Farhat, is going to be more difficult to get through on Tuesday. Sabu is heavily involved in that episode as Ed Farhat is his uncle. Sabu is going to be the main talking head of that documentary, and expect him to be speaking half of that episode. It’s going to be tough to hear him talk, as this footage is likely the last interview he ever did while he was alive.
Sabu was one of the greatest professional wrestlers in the hardcore wrestling scene and he will never be forgotten. My thoughts and prayers go out to Sabu’s Friends and Family. Rest in Peace, Sabu.
