Xabi Alonso has just announced that he will leave Bayer Leverkusen at the end of this season. The head coach is leaving with the appreciation of the club’s fans. How will this affect the team’s future?
In a tweet shared on X, Bayer Leverkusen announced Xabi Alonso’s exit. The tweet says, “After almost two-and-a-half years, and during the most successful period in the club’s history, our head coach, @XabiAlonso, will leave #Bayer04 at the end of the season.”
On the other hand, Alonso had his own words to share. “The club and I agreed this week that the next two Bundesliga games will be my last as coach of Leverkusen,” he said during a press conference.
It’s not an exaggeration to claim that Xabi Alonso has completely changed Bayer Leverkusen since he took charge. He transformed them from a team at a low level in the table to one capable of winning titles.
During his two and a half years at the club, Alonso won Bayer Leverkusen’s first Bundesliga title and the DFB Cup. The head coach also led them to the final of the Europa League, but they lost it.
The team is still grateful for him. “The successes achieved under Xabi Alonso’s leadership have earned Bayer 04 lasting recognition in football. Bringing the championship trophy back to Leverkusen undefeated, as well as the DFB Cup victory, reaching the Europa League final, and winning the Supercup – we are very proud of all of this,” said the club’s CEO, Fernando Carro, according to Sky Germany.
Xabi Alonso refused to state directly what his next step will be. According to Sky Germany, he said when asked about the topic, “I’m not talking about that. This is not the moment.”
However, the publication, along with other sources, reports that he is set to join Real Madrid and replace current head coach Carlo Ancelotti.
If Xabi Alonso actually heads to Real Madrid, the Spanish club would have won itself an elite head coach. He already showed the world his capability of changing teams around and returning the players’ confidence in themselves. Real Madrid currently needs this confidence.
They have been struggling recently with results that aren’t satisfying to management or the fans. They left their favorite championship win, and they departed the Champions League. It has been a bad season for Real Madrid.
Someone like Alonso can fix what Ancelotti has broken. The latter did have good days at Madrid, but they are over now. It’s time for the club to move on. Their new target is Alonso.
I believe that Alonso would positively impact Real Madrid. He will be a delight for the club’s fans. On the other hand, his appointment will probably annoy other clubs hoping that Real Madrid will keep struggling for a little longer.
