UFC fans have been looking for a resolution to the Conor McGregor vs. Michael Chandler saga for almost three years now. Many have lost their hope and abandoned the idea of this fight altogether. The mind games between the pair (mostly from McGregor’s side) haven’t looked serious since their bout cancellation in June last year.
Groundhog Day continues with McGregor calling out Chandler yet another time, and Chandler quickly responding in fear of losing the much-anticipated opportunity.
By this point, McGregor calling out Chandler, or the opposite, means nothing more than white noise to the public. Since the fight was first talked about — when Chandler beat Tony Ferguson via a highlight reel knockout and called out the Irishman after — the American lost three in a row.
All of that while “Notorious” has been partying, buying promotions, appearing in movies, getting into scandals, and even teasing his presidential campaign.
In 2023, the two appeared as the coaches on “The Ultimate Fighter” show, the idea of which — besides looking for the up-and-coming contenders — is for the coaches to fight at the end of a season. Needless to say, the bout never happened, with McGregor barely looking interested in actually stepping inside the Octagon even back then.
The second annual season of TUF since McGregor-Chandler is getting close, and there is still as much certainty in this fight ever taking place as in McGregor’s potential to become the president of Ireland.
To sum it all up, nobody believes that the pair will actually meet inside the Octagon at any point, and what’s worse, nobody cares that much.
Chandler has more McGregor callouts than wins in the UFC, and that is telling. I understand “Iron Mike” entertaining the idea of facing the Irishman at this point. He has reached the highs of this sport in his Bellator and UFC runs, and the three-fight skid is telling that he doesn’t have much left in the tank.
At the same time, it is almost comical how much McGregor doesn’t care. He even stopped uploading videos from the gym to get everyone talking about the big comeback again.
It is time to admit that McGregor vs. Chandler is no longer the super fight it once was, and the fighters themselves are not the same either.
