Chicago Blackhawks Center Connor Bedard is one season away from finishing up his rookie contract. On July 17, 2023, Bedard signed a contract with Chicago on a 3-year, $2,850,000 deal, expiring at the end of the 2025-2026 NHL season.
NHL players are considered eligible for an extension whenever they enter their last year of a multi-year contract. While the Hawks would want to lock him up with an early extension, Bedard has more to gain by waiting until his contract expire.
Here’s why:
Maximize His Value

Bedard’s value will only increase if he waits. Right now, this kid barely even scratched the surface of his full potential, and as he continues to develop, his point production and overall impact on the ice will rise.
Rising Salary Cap
The NHL’s salary cap is expected to increase significantly in the coming years. With new media deals and revenue growth, the cap could be higher when Bedard’s entry-level contract expires in 2026. By waiting, his options open and applies pressure on the front office to build a contending team around him, he is the franchise guy.
If he waits, he could sign a contract that takes advantage of a larger percentage of team payrolls rather than being locked in to a deal with current cap restrictions.
Chicago’s Roster Situation

The Blackhawks are still in rebuild mode, and their long-term competitiveness is uncertain. If Bedard commits too early, he could find himself stuck in a situation where the team struggles to get another Stanley Cup. Unfortunately, that’s why “Showtime” Patrick Kane parted ways with Chicago.
End Of My Bedard Contract Rant
While security and loyalty are factors in contracts decisions, Bedard has little to lose by being patient. If he waits until 2026, he’ll have a clearer picture of his career trajectory. He is Chicago’s future. In the long run, holding off on an early extension could mean bigger payday down the road and hopefully keep him in the Windy City forever.
