With star safety Jevon Holland signing with the New York Giants, and fellow starter Jordan Poyer’s future unknown, the Dolphins needed to look elsewhere in free agency.
The Dolphins signed former Detroit Lions safety Ifeatu “Iffy” Melifonwu. What are they getting in the newest addition to their secondary?
Dolphins Iffy Deal Is A Win-Win
The Dolphins could not afford to invest the money to keep Holland. Instead, they opted for a cheaper route by signing Iffy to a one-year prove-it deal worth three million dollars. The agreement is beneficial for both parties.
Iffy’s hopes for a big payday or long-term contract were dashed when he missed most of the 2024 season with an ankle injury. This deal allows him to prove himself and get a long-term contract next offseason.
For the Dolphins, the deal is low-risk, high-reward. They acquired a talented player at a very affordable price, and with no future financial commitment, they can move on if it doesn’t work out.
Iffy Has Strong Ties To The Dolphins
Brian Duker, Dolphin’s defensive pass game coordinator and defensive backs coach, is familiar with Iffy.
Duker was a defensive assistant with the Lions in 2021 before being promoted to safeties coach in 2020 and eventually defensive backs coach in 2023.
There is no doubt that Duker was involved in the decision to bring Iffy to Miami.
Lions Drafted Melifonwu In 2021
Iffy was a third-round pick out of Syracuse. He was a three-year starter at safety, but most draft analysts felt he had upside as a press cornerback due to his size, athleticism, and toughness.

Iffy Is An Explosive Athlete
Iffy has elite athleticism. His broad jump, vertical jump, and 10-yard splits are in the 98th or 99th percentile among defensive backs.
Numbers aside, his explosiveness jumps out on the tape. Once he starts working toward the ball or ball carrier, he covers a lot of ground quickly—it’s like he’s shot out of a rocket.
He Is A Chess Piece
Iffy is 6’2″ and uses his height well but has a slim frame and below-average strength. Despite that, he is capable of playing in the box. He uses his instincts to get in position to affect the ball carrier and his toughness and relentlessness to work through blocks.
In deep zone coverage, Iffy is very decisive. He doesn’t hesitate and quickly breaks to where the ball is going, often arriving just as the ball does. He uses his length at the point of contact to make the catch difficult, break up the pass, or come down with the pick.
Melifonwu is comfortable throwing his body around to make a big hit over the middle, and he has a knack for jarring the ball loose.
Iffy is an elite blitzer at the position. He is good at disguising and timing his blitz, making backs and tight ends struggle to pick it up. When he comes up the seams, he excels at finding gaps, getting skinny, and working through traffic.

Availability Is His Biggest Weakness
Iffy’s career has been plagued with injuries. During his time at Syracuse, he missed two games in his freshman year and another two in his sophomore year.
In the NFL, Iffy spent most of his rookie year on injured reserve with a quad injury, missing 10 games. In 2022, he missed seven games with an ankle injury. Then, in 2024, Melifonwu missed all but three games with an ankle injury.
In total, Iffy has missed 31 games in four seasons.
Iffy Moved Back To Saftey In 2022
The experiment of moving Iffy to CB did not work out. Mentally, he struggled to grasp the position. Physically, he was too rigid in the hips and slow to come out of his backpedal.
Ahead of the 2022 season, the Lions moved Iffy back to his natural position, safety.
Ifeatu Finished 2023 Strong
After spending most of the season working as a special teamer, Iffy finally earned the opportunity to start in Week 14, he remained the starter for the rest of the regular season.
Iffy was an absolute terror during that time. He recorded three sacks, two INTs, and seven passes defended in his five starts. He even received an NFC Defensive Player of the Week award for his performance in the Lions’ division-clinching win over the Minnesota Vikings.
Iffy seemed poised to play a key role for the Lions in 2024, but a training camp ankle injury cost him most of the season.

Iffy’s Role With The Dolphins
It is unlikely that the Dolphins signed Iffy as a reserve—they fully expect him to earn a starting safety position.
Iffy’s ability to play deep and blitz gives Defensive Coordinator Anthony Weaver a unique chess piece he can use creatively and tactically.
End of My Dolphins Ifeatu Melifonwu Rant
New Dolphins safety Ifeatu “Iffy” Melifonwu is an explosive athlete with a unique skill set. He’s a force when he plays, but the question is—can he stay healthy?
