The Edmonton Oilers have reclaimed defenseman Travis Dermott from the Minnesota Wild. Dermott was placed on waivers by the Wild not long after making his way to the team. The Oilers had placed him on waivers earlier this season and have now recollected him to their roster.

Dermott had played in nine games in Minnesota and never recorded a single point. His average ice time was a little over 11 minutes. His time in Edmonton prior was not any better. He had played in 10 games with no points and averaging a little over 13 points.

Oilers Claim Defenseman Off Waivers To Grow Team Depth

Dermott was drafted by the Toronto Maple Leafs and was a sought-after prospect. He spent five seasons with Toronto where he had a high average of ice time and average number of points. He was traded to the Vancouver Canucks in the 2021-2022 season, spending a little over a season with the team. Since that time he bounced from the Coyotes to the Oilers and Wild. Only to return the same season to Edmonton.

Dermott’s Career Has Taken Him From Team To Team

Dermott had started the 2024-2025 season by taking a tryout offer with the Oilers. His stint in Edmonton was up in December when he was placed on waivers. Edmonton has taken him from Minnesota to send him to further develop in the AHL.

Dermott was drafted in the second round in 2015. He made his debut in 2018 facing the Vancouver Canucks. He bounced around between the AHL and the NHL, only being called up when he was needed. He assisted the AHL Marlies in winning the Calder Cup Championship after the Maple Leafs were eliminated from the playoffs.

In the 2018-2019 season, he finally became a regular in the NHL. He scored four goals in each of the following two seasons. He played 28 games before being sent to the Arizona Coyotes where he played in 50 games. He has been bounced around from team to team, but brings some qualities to teams who can claim him. Dermott shoots left-handed which can be valuable to a team who requires a lefty.

He has played in 339 games throughout his career with 62 points, 316 blocked shots and 391 hits. His experience helps the team as they continue to think of other option to help the roster.

Oilers Have Plans For Dermitt If He Is Not Picked Up

Edmonton Oilers

The Oilers are lacking in depth and are making changes to address those concerns. When the Oilers had placed him on waivers in December they did not expect him to be picked so fast. The Wild were battling an injury among their players and needed a defenseman to fill the gap. This pushed the franchise back on a plan moving forward.

The Oilers are thin in the area of a left-shot defenseman. There are three players as of now they are relying on, Darnell Nurse, Brett Kulak and Mattias Ekholm. They are limited in this area as the rest of their defenders are right-handed shooters. In the Oilers AHL team, there is only one player who is a left-shot defender, making the depth limited.

End Of My Oilers Rant

As of Wednesday, it was confirmed that he will be sent to the Bakersfield Condors. This also provides flexibility to the franchise to move him between the AHL and NHL when needed. He has great skating abilities, reads defensively plays well and is an asset when he plays well. He has also been known for his passing skill and transition in moving the puck along the ice.

Time will tell if this move will benefit the team as they hope. The Oilers are making moves this season. Add to the hockey excitement with DraftKings to bet on Edmonton, or any other NHL team!
