To be a successful MMA fighter, you need to be extremely disciplined. It’s not just a career but a lifestyle. It’s a common story: when an athlete gains a certain amount of fame and fortune, things can start to spiral quickly. This sport’s history is short, but several high-profile athletes have made headlines for the wrong reasons over the years. Let me share with you five MMA fighters whose legal trouble got the better of them.
When discussing MMA fighters’ legal troubles, the first name that often comes to mind is the “Great” Jon Jones. Most consider Jones to be the Michael Jordan of Mixed Martial Arts. His resume is undeniable in its accomplishments. The same could be said about his criminal/legal record, which has definitely tainted his legacy.
In 2015, Jones was involved in a hit-and-run accident involving a pregnant woman. Jones fled the scene of the crime, shortly returning to grab his cash and marijuana before fleeing again. The incident would result in Jones receiving felony charges. The career ramifications would include Jones being stripped of his title and halting one of the greatest runs the UFC has ever seen.
That incident in itself would be enough to define most athletes’ stories. For Jones, this was only the beginning. He has also faced multiple DUI arrests, possession of cocaine, probation violations, domestic allegations, and tested positive for performance-enhancing drugs. Who could ever forget getting educated on what a picogram was? His story remains one of the most unique, and some would say remarkable, as he was still able to compete at the highest level.
Any casual fan knows of the “Notorious” Conor McGregor. The man who figured out how to make money in a sport when no one else could. Through is prime, he was bold, charismatic, and calculated. In 2018, that calculation turned to chaos. During a UFC media event in Brooklyn, McGregor threw a metal dolly at a bus full of fighters with his eye on Khabib Nurmagomedov. He injured multiple UFC fighters in the act, which resulted in fights being pulled from the card, and one fighter dealing with extreme PTSD.
Although this incident would later be used as promotional hype, it was a criminal act that led to the arrest of the Irishman, who would be charged with assault. McGregor, like Jones, has a laundry list of legal infractions to his name. In 2019 alone, he was arrested in Miami for smashing a man’s phone and walking away with it. He also punched an elderly man in a Dublin pub later that year. In 2024, he was accused of sexual assault from an alleged 2018 incident. An Irish High Court jury found McGregor civilly liable for raping and battering Nikita Hand.
Each of these moments has grabbed worldwide attention. These legal troubles have served as a strong reminder that even people of the highest popularity are not immune. That is when a line is crossed; there will be consequences for the actions regardless of status and wealth.
When looking at the examples in history of fighter offenses, most would agree that Jonathan Paul Koppenhaver takes the cake. Some cases are controversial, and some are unquestionably bad, but there are a few that I would consider truly disturbing. Many consider what “War Machine” did in 2014 to be one of the most sobering examples in sports history.
He would be arrested following a brutal attack on his ex-girlfriend and adult film actress, Cristy Mack. The specificity of his crimes would come to light during a lengthy trial, and the severity of them would shock more than just the MMA audience, but the general public as well.
War Machine would ultimately be convicted on multiple felony accounts that included kidnapping, sexual assault, and domestic battery. He would be sentenced to life in prison with the possibility of parole after thirty-six years. To this day, it is viewed as a big stain on the sport’s history, which is based on violence. To me, this serves as an example that just because you can fight, it doesn’t necessarily mean you should be trained to.
Jason “Mayhem” Miller had all the tools needed to be a celebrity in the MMA space. The man was charismatic with a lot of personality, and fans adored him. All was good until it wasn’t, as legal troubles began to follow Miller.
Things started to spiral for Miller over the years. He’s been arrested multiple times for various offenses such as vandalism, trespassing, domestic violence, and resisting arrest. There was a strange case where Miller was found inside a church naked. This led to many headlines and many of his friends and family questioning the well-being of the fighter and former reality TV star.
What makes Miller’s story somewhat unique is how quickly things escalated for him. Situations such as his are a stark reminder of the importance of managing substance abuse and mental health. Miller has recently been on an upward trajectory and is co-hosting the podcast alongside Adam Corolla on “The Adam Corolla Show”. While his story is not complete, he might be a case where he’s remembered more for his behavior and legal troubles, and less for his accomplishments.
There aren’t that many legal stories involving fighters that are as emotionally charged as the case involving former UFC heavyweight champion, Cain Velasquez. In March of 2022, he was arrested following a high-speed chase and shooting incident. Velasquez pursued a man with his car and shot at the man for allegedly molesting his four-year-old son. His shot missed, and Velasquez hit the man’s stepfather instead. The result of this was an attempted murder charge.
The case was extremely controversial and divisive. Many of his fans expressed sympathy and understanding for his motives. Unfortunately for him, the court addressed his actions and not his motives. This is a case that stands out to me due to its uniqueness. The contrast of emotional understanding against the law, which must remain absolute.
In a sport that built its identity on resilience, toughness, and dominance, these stories are prime examples of an opponent that can not be decisioned, submitted, or knocked out. Whether it was a case-by-case situation or a long term crimal case, the law continues to remain undefeated. MMA is already viewed by many with a sceptical eye, and these examples serve as reminders that whatever greatness one might achieve inside the cage does not excuse the choice of behavior outside of it.
