Since Liv Morgan and Raquel Rodriguez won the WWE Women’s Tag Team Championship back in February, there has not been much activity surrounding the belts. Outside of losing them for less than 24 hours at WrestleMania, the belts have stayed put with Judgment Day without much competition. Liv did step away for about a month to film a movie, but even before that, she and Raquel held onto the titles without much opposition.
In light of recent events, competition could be on the way in the women’s tag team division. There have been recent and upcoming returns, as well as new alliances, that could lead to more challenges for the women’s tag titles. Liv got eliminated from the Queen of the Ring tournament, so her focus may now shift back towards the tag division and whoever decides to step up to the plate.
Here are five potential challengers for the WWE Women’s Tag Team Championship.
After winning a tag team gauntlet match (defeating all four teams along the way), Bayley and Lyra Valkyria earned a shot at the tag titles at WrestleMania. Unfortunately for “The Role Model” Bayley, she was robbed of her shot after being attacked backstage one day before the match. Liv and Raquel were nearby, so they looked guilty of the attack. They denied it and also assumed the title defense would no longer take place.
The returning Becky Lynch, however, would step in and help Lyra win the tag titles. She and Lyra would lose the titles the following night on Raw to Liv and Raquel, which led to Becky turning on Lyra and eventually admitting to the attack on Bayley.
Bayley returned on the most recent episode of Raw after a nearly two-month absence and attacked Lynch as she confronted Lyra. Lynch tried to escape the attack, but she was thrown back into the ring by Valkyria. Eventually, Becky was able to get away, escaping a Rose Plant attempt from Bayley.
Although there is probably unfinished business with Becky, Bayley may still want that tag title shot as well. She ran the gauntlet with Lyra, and when the ultimate prize was in sight on the biggest stage, she had to forfeit. To be denied another shot at the tag titles would be unfair to Bayley.
Nearly one month after Kairi Sane’s return, the other half of the Kabuki Warriors, Asuka, is set to return on the upcoming episode of Raw. She will take part in a Fatal Four-Way Queen of the Ring tournament match against Stephanie Vaquer, Ivy Nile, and Rodriguez. It has been over a year since Asuka last competed inside a WWE ring due to a knee injury, so there may be a bit of ring rust.
What’s interesting is that Asuka will have an opportunity to face Raquel, who, along with Liv, has had a few run-ins with both Sane and Women’s World Champion Iyo Sky. Perhaps that ongoing feud will result in Asuka stepping in and reuniting with her Kabuki Warrior teammate to make another run at the Women’s Tag Team Championship.
Stephanie Vaquer and Lola Vice teamed up for the first time in WWE at World’s Collide, defeating Chik Tormenta and Dalys in tag team action. The crowd reacted strongly to the team of Vaquer and Vice, especially when they delivered a double Devil’s Kiss. The match would conclude with Vaquer hitting her SVB finisher on Dalys.
With a successful tag team debut and a positive crowd reaction, it seems likely that Vaquer and Vice will tag up again in the future. Although they are currently on different brands, Vice is reportedly under consideration for a main roster call-up. If that is the case, Raw would probably make the most sense. That would lead to more opportunities for the duo to compete together and eventually challenge for the tag titles.
Natalya has taken Maxxine Dupri under her wing lately. They’ve been together in several backstage promos and also competed together in the aforementioned women’s tag team gauntlet match. After initially doubting her, Natalya has now praised Maxxine for her dedication to her craft and positive attitude:
“I am actually really excited about doing more with Maxxine because she’s somebody that the audience has a real connection with. Whenever she is in the ring and she gets a chance to do something, even if it is just on Main Event, she maximizes every minute.”
Reports are that Natalya and Dupri will become an official tag team soon. There has even been a name for the duo floating around, which is the Dungeon Dolls. This pays homage to the legendary Hart Family Dungeon started by Natalya’s grandfather, the late great Stu Hart.
Natalya and Dupri have had a run-in with the WWE Women’s Tag Team Champions in the past. Maxxine, while trying to convince Natalya to let her train at the Hart Dungeon, was approached by Liv along with Raquel. Liv told Maxxine that she should quit because she was no Liv Morgan. She and Raquel then walked away laughing while Dupri turned back towards Natalya with a depressed on her face. Perhaps that moment has stuck with both of them and could serve as the motivation to make a run at the champs.
This one is the biggest long shot, as they are not currently under contract with the WWE. Rumors surfaced that The Tonga Twins, Taahine, and TalaVou could make the jump to WWE, however, after showing up at the Performance Center last year. They were trained by Rikishi, so although they are not directly related to members of the Bloodline, they are very much like family.
Numerous rumors surrounding a transition to WWE have surfaced over the past several weeks, and the Twins have no problem with entertaining them. Most recently, a fan called out Shawn Michaels, the Senior Vice President of Talent Development, via X, asking what he was waiting for. Ta’ahine reposted it, seemingly meaning that she agreed with the statement.
Taahine herself made a couple of posts last month that suggested a potential timeline for a WWE debut. The first post said “What if,” and she followed up the next day by posting one word, “Evolution.” Could that mean the Tonga Twins will perhaps debut next month at WWE Evolution? There is no official match card yet, which means anything could happen. With the lack of activity in the women’s tag team division, the Tongas could ascend right into the tag title mix.
The WWE women’s tag team division has faced much criticism, and honestly, it is for good reason. There are not many true women’s tag teams, the booking is inconsistent, and the division feels like an afterthought. That is a far cry from the men’s division, where you can run off the names of numerous tag teams without hesitation: New Day, Street Profits, DIY, War Raiders, Motor City Machine Gun, Pretty Deadly, Fraxiom, I could go on.
Hopefully, some form of spark is on the horizon for the division. There are many great talents in the women’s division, and that is even truer now with recent returns and main roster call-ups. You can only have so many superstars competing for singles titles, so why not start focusing more energy on building the women’s tag division? With WWE Evolution around the corner, more attention will probably be on the women’s division overall. That may conceivably lead to more focus on developing the tag division as well.
