22-year-old Lois Boisson was relatively unknown prior to playing at Roland Garros. Now everyone will certainly being hearing about her.
Just a couple of days removed from a massive upset over third-ranked Jessica Pegula, Lois Boisson did it again. This time upsetting sixth-ranked Maria Andreeva. Boisson continued her confident play and defeated Andreeva in straight sets (7⁸-6⁶) and 6-3.
The sixth-ranked Russian showed frustration at times with the crowd. The partisan crowd cheered multiple times before Andreeva serves, causing her to stop and start again.
The 18-year-old then received a warning for angrily hitting a ball into the stands after a Boisson point.
She was up 3-0 in the second set at the time, but that moment seemed to turn the tide. Andreeva never really settled down and Boisson fought back to win.
Boisson looked in danger of losing the first set down 5-3. Boisson kept fighting and took advantage of Andreeva’s mistakes. She fought back into the set and forced a tiebreak which she ultimately won.
Boisson becomes the youngest French semifinalist since world number one Amelie Mauresmo did it at Wimbledon in 1999. She has currently moved up to 68th in the world with her magical run.
The next test comes against American Coco Gauff. The two seed in the tourney is certainly the heavy favorite.
Boisson certainly doesn’t care about that though. No one expected her to be here but she is. With confidence at an all time high she certainly has a shot. Gauff beat Madison Keys in her most recent match. Keys was able to win the first set 7⁸-6⁶. After that though Gauff turned it on and won 6-4, 6-1.
Boisson needs to watch out for Gauff’s serve which has been her weapon so far.
The Frenchwoman won’t shy away from the competition but overall Gauff is too good. The American will win in 3 sets and move onto the finals. Aryna Sabalenka or Iga Swiatek await the winner.
Will Boisson be able to continue her magical run? Will Gauff dominate? Those questions will be answered as the matchup between them kicks off tomorrow. A match time has yet to be determined.
