The New York Mets need a lot of help in the bullpen. Currently, they only have three reliable individuals: Huascar Brazoban, Reed Garrett, and Edwin Diaz. Their bullpen has been overworked all season, and they require some extra help. There are three guys that they could acquire at the deadline.
Danny Coulombe could be a massive addition for the Mets, especially when they need to get through those middle innings. Coulombe is having one of the best years of his career. He is 1-0, with a .65 ERA through 27.2 innings this season. Not only is he having such a fantastic year, but the Mets also have interest in him. It would be a no-brainer for them to get a guy like him at the deadline.
David Bednar is having a bounce-back year for the Pirates after an awful season last year. Bednar dropped his ERA from 5.77 last year to 2.53 ERA this year. He would be the perfect setup guy for the Mets. Even on Diaz’s off days, they can always look to bring in Bednar to close it out. This trade would be a massive help to their currently underperforming bullpen.
If the Mets are serious about making a run this year, they would try to go all in for a guy like Aroldis Chapman. Chapman, who is having another fantastic year, racking up his 8th all-star appearance, would be a massive help for the Mets in more ways than one. Not only would he be the setup guy for Diaz, but if Diaz were to somehow go down with an injury, then you could always slot Chapman into the closer role until Diaz is back. Yes, this trade may take a bigger trade package than the other two to complete this trade, but Chapman would be the guy the Mets need to close out a big game.
While it remains to be seen if the Mets will go big or go home at the deadline, one of their obvious holes is the bullpen. Acquiring one of these three players would be huge for them and would help them stop bringing up minor leaguers who aren’t ready. It will make them a top contender and eliminate one of their obvious issues. With less than two weeks remaining, it will be interesting to see what the Mets will be up to at this deadline.
