If Pete Alonso ends up walking in free agency, the Mets will have a huge hole at first base. Here are three options for the Mets at first base if Alonso does end up leaving in free agency.
MLB free agency has been underway for some time now and Pete Alonso is still a free agent, and the Mets still have a hole at first base. Pete Alonso is reportedly looking for a six-year deal. The Mets have reportedly given Alonso a few offers that he has rejected so far. If the Mets end up losing out on Pete, they will then have to deal with a huge hole to fill.
There are ways they can deal with that, and I have three ideas as to how the Mets can fill that void and help this team to try and make another playoff run.
The first option is Mark Vientos. Vientos, who had a breakout year last season with the Mets, ended the season with a slash line of .266/.322/.516/.838 and had 27 homers and 71 RBIs to go along with it. Vientos also played some solid defense at third base and showed improvement all around.
If the Mets were to lose Alonso to another team, they can always move Vientos to first as he has a little experience playing there, and use someone like a Brett Baty, Ronny Mauricio, or Luisangel Acuna at third base. Vientos is also a younger option as he is five years younger than Alonso.
The second option is Alex Bregman. Now I know what you’re thinking, he’s a third baseman and has never played a game at first base. While this may be true, the Astros were planning on using Bregman at first base in the future, as he was dealing with an elbow issue. The 30-year-old Bregman also has championship experience, having won two championships with the Astros, even though some don’t count 2017 as an actual ring because of the cheating scandal. He is also a multi-time all-star and has great defense which just earned him his first Gold Glove last season.
The third and final option for the Mets is a trade option, and the man they can trade for is Nolan Arenado. Arenado is another player who can move from third base to first base as he has stated in the past, he is open to switching positions. Arenado is a Hall of Fame talent and defensive wizard being a winner of ten straight Gold Gloves up until the 2022 season. Arenado, who had a down year in terms of offense, was still able to put up a slash line of .272/.325/.394/.719 and had 16 homers and 72 RBIs. Arenado would be a solid addition to the Mets’ lineup and would get rid of that first base hole for them.
These are three options the Mets can use to fill up that hole at first if Pete Alonso were to walk. One in-house option, one free agent option, and one trade option all of which are definitely doable for them. It will be interesting to see if the Mets end up having to use one of these options, or if Pete will end up going back to the Mets. It remains to be seen what will happen as the offseason continues for the MLB. We will have to be on the lookout for the Mets and Pete Alonso’s next steps in this interesting free agency.
