The NHL announced Wednesday that the 2027 Winter Classic would be played at Rice-Eccles Stadium, with the Utah Mammoth hosting the Colorado Avalanche. The event marks the first of its kind for the relocated franchise, giving Utah something to look forward to in their third year of play.

The Winter Classic is an event most NHL fans look forward to. The 2027 rendition of the game is going to be headlined by stars like Clayton Keller and Nathan MacKinnon. Both players have been bright spots for their respective teams throughout this season, and it seems like the league will continue to market them as the event gets closer.

Keller and MacKinnon have been two of the most popular players on their respective teams throughout their entire careers. Because of their popularity, it seems likely that the two will be used to promote the event, which will likely increase the chances of the event being successful. There’s almost nothing better than watching the best the league has to offer go head-to-head, an opportunity the NHL doesn’t want to miss.

Either way, watching the two of them battle it out on one of the biggest stages the sport has to offer will be a blast for both the players and fans. The Central Division matchup will allow fans to witness some of the game’s greatest players in a marquee event that has all the makings of a spectacular contest. This game will be talked about for quite some time now that it’s been announced, so fans should be sure to mark their calendars.

Giving such a high profile event to the Mammoth shows the NHL’s faith in the team to grow the game, a great sign of things to come for Utah. With the team finally settling into their new home and finding their identity as part of the Salt Lake City community, the timing could not have been better.

The Mammoth are one of the league’s most intriguing teams so far this season, and have been since their relocation. With the team in the postseason hunt at the halfway mark of the 2025-26 season, fans could be seeing a playoff caliber team at the event in 2027.

Utah has connected to its community in a way that some teams struggle to do when they relocate, and I think this is a great opportunity for the club. The Winter Classic is such a great way to connect with fans, something the NHL and the Mammoth are not going to pass up. I’m looking forward to seeing what the Winter Classic looks like in Utah, and I’m sure most fans of both the Mammoth and Avalanche are too.

End Of My Winter Classic Rant

The Winter Classic has been one of the highlights of the NHL season since the first one was played in 2008, and next year will be no different. Utah being chosen to host the 2027 rendition signals an era where the NHL is trying to drive hockey into different markets and allow the game to grow.

Given that the Florida Panthers hosted the event last week, it seems like the NHL is fully embracing the chance to grow, and doing so with big events is a great marketing opportunity. Growing the game of hockey is such an important facet of the NHL and has taken center stage throughout the past few years. Seeing an event like this in a new place is awesome to witness.
