WBC, depending on who you’re talking with, they might think you’re talking about your white blood cell count. In the baseball world, those three letters have a different meaning.

With the cancellation of baseball in the Olympics, baseball had found itself on the outside looking in when it came to international competition tournaments, with basketball having the Olympics and FIBA, and soccer having the World Cup; it finally made sense: baseball needed its own World Cup. This lack of international competition led to the World Baseball Classic, or WBC, being created in 2006. Ever since the first iteration of the WBC, there have been exciting games, plays, and the world’s best players playing for national pride. Baseball fans had been clamoring for an event like this, but if not careful, the tournament could lose its exciting nature due to injuries.

Injuries, Injuries, Injuries

The WBC, while being amazing to watch, has had its own fair share of injuries. Ever since the inauguration of the event, many organizations haven’t been too keen on their top stars participating. One in particular was Edwin Diaz, formerly of the New York Mets, who, while playing for Puerto Rico, tore his patellar tendon celebrating a walk-off win in the 2023 tournament. The injury he sustained diminished Puerto Rico’s chances of winning the WBC that year and also negatively affected the Mets’ season, as he was expected to be the team’s closer.

In the same WBC, Houston Astros star player Jose Altuve suffered a thumb fracture after being hit in the hand by a pitch while playing for Venezuela. This injury caused him to miss the first couple of months of the season, setting him back a few months.

In preparations for the 2026 WBC, we’ve already seen a hand injury to one of the players selected to the team. Corbin Carroll of the Arizona Diamondbacks suffered a fracture to the hamate bone in his wrist while taking batting practice. Carroll, one of the top young players in the MLB, will not only miss the WBC but will also miss the beginning of the 2026 season.

Obviously, injuries can happen at any point in the year, but no organization wants this hanging over their heads as they enter a new season. While the WBC is very important to the sport of baseball, you don’t want to see the event marred by injuries, taking the fun out of it. It’s an unfortunate circumstance for these organizations.

Taking An Insurance Policy

Insurance is a good thing to have, whether it’s insurance for your house in the case of flood damage or insurance on your vehicle in the case of an accident. Having insurance in these cases can help to lower the cost of damages you, as the insurance owner, would have to pay upfront for any damages to either party. If you don’t have insurance, then you, as the one who has the accident, are responsible for the funds entirely. This is not unlike how having insurance on these players could leave organizations responsible for the “damages” rendered.

Teams in the MLB are hesitant to allow their players to participate due to the injuries that were sustained in previous tournaments. In fact, it is making it even more difficult for them to participate by denying their participation due to insurance policies. Players who wish to participate in the WBC must receive permission, or be “insured to play” permission, from their MLB club’s front office to participate.

The insurance policies put into place have made a significant impact on the WBC ever since the Edwin Diaz injury mentioned above that MLB clubs to be more strict about allowing elite players participate. Francisco Lindor, who had been selected as the Puerto Rican team captain, was denied permission to play due to the Mets organization pulling him from participating in the tournament.

In fact, he’s not the only one. There are multiple reports that the Puerto Rican team may need to back out of the tournament entirely due to a lack of eligible players to participate for the country.

Or, It’s A Ploy

What if this is all a conspiracy? Could organizations be actively trying to hinder other countries in the World Baseball Classic to improve the chances of the United States, or any country, for that matter?

That would be a very interesting development regarding starpower in the event being restricted by a bit too much “national pride.” After the United States team lost the 2023 classic, could we be seeing national favoritism? Restricting other countries from having their best players?

Although not a positive one, it could be an interesting development in garnering interest in the event if we’re going to keep losing top players.

End Of My WBC 2026 Rant

Regardless of the fact whether it’s injuries, teams not wanting to lose their star players, or a conspiracy of national favoritism, the overall view of the game is affected. The tournament was meant to be fun and to put it on the level of something similar to the World Cup, generating more interest in the sport. There must be more attention paid to these organizations’ concerns about the event if they want to keep generating interest in the sport.
