The Big Ten conference has secured three consecutive national championships, while the SEC is facing widespread headlines about transfer portal issues, eligibility questions, and tampering accusations. The Big Ten has experienced a major resurgence in college football, claiming the last three college football national championships, each by a different school. The SEC, once dominant, has not had a team in the national title game for the past three years.
SEC Transfer & Tampering Headlines
The SEC has been a focal point for controversy regarding the current Name, Image, and Likeness (NIL) and transfer portal era. Recent headlines have focused on specific accusations of tampering, eligibility, and more.

Clemson vs. Ole Miss: Clemson head coach Dabo Swinney has publicly accused Ole Miss of blatant tampering with linebacker Luke Ferrelli, who transferred to Clemson before flipping his commitment to the Rebels. The NCAA is investigating the credible allegations.
Lane Kiffin’s December 2025 move from Ole Miss to LSU sparked significant SEC controversy. It was marked by public disputes with Athletic Director Keith Carter over his exit timing before the College Football Playoffs. Accusations came to light of “poaching” players and coaches, and the chaos of the transfer portal opening during the College Football Playoff. The saga highlighted the chaotic nature of the current college football landscape, including alleged tampering by his staff.
Charles Bediako is currently eligible to play college basketball for the University of Alabama under a court-issued temporary restraining order. Despite the NCAA’s stance that he is ineligible. A hearing on a preliminary injunction is scheduled for Friday, February 6, 2026, which will determine if he can continue to play for the remainder of the season. The NCAA maintains Bediako is ineligible because he signed multiple NBA two-way and Exhibit 10 contracts and played in the G League after leaving Alabama in 2023. According to NCAA rules, signing an NBA contract (including a two-way deal) ends a player’s college eligibility.

Diego Pavia, a standout quarterback for Vanderbilt University in the Southeastern Conference (SEC), became the center of a major NCAA eligibility controversy during the 2024 and 2025 seasons. His legal battle against the NCAA challenged the rules regarding how junior college (JUCO) years count toward a player’s eligibility. This resulted in a landmark injunction that allowed him to continue playing and forced the NCAA to change its policy.
Conference Governance
The ongoing issues and perceived lack of enforcement by the NCAA are pushing the SEC to consider creating its own internal governance and rules.
- Enforceable Contracts: By moving toward a Collective Bargaining Agreement (CBA) model, the SEC can create contracts that function more like professional sports, reducing the revolving door of the transfer portal.
- Financial Might: The SEC continues to generate superior revenue compared to other conferences, ensuring they can afford the highest talent-acquisition costs.

SEC Commissioner Greg Sankey has fostered a culture of collaboration over conflict, keeping the 16+ member institutions aligned despite the pressures of expansion and litigation.
- Autonomy from the NCAA: The SEC is leading the charge for the Power Four conferences to act independently of the NCAA, focusing on controlling their own financial and legal destiny.

SEC Commissioner Greg Sankey has been a vocal critic of the current chaotic landscape in college sports. Particularly with the inconsistencies in transfer portal rules, the lack of enforcement against tampering, and the complex issues surrounding Name, Image, and Likeness (NIL). He believes the NCAA is responsible for enforcement and has been notably absent from the current controversies involving SEC schools, leading to criticism of his leadership.
Sankey has offered reform ideas and expressed dissatisfaction with the current system. His public stance, though, has been to call on the NCAA and Congress to provide clearer, enforceable guidelines, rather than the SEC taking unilateral punitive action on the issues.
