LeBron James may be the greatest NBA player of all time, but he still craves attention like an unwanted stepchild. Everything he does is to feed his need for power and control. This isn’t a huge deal in itself, but it shows he thinks he is above the rest.
On April 11, 2025, the Los Angeles Lakers exploded for 140 points in their win over the Houston Rockets. One may assume it’s a whine to the referee or one of his famous flops, but James caused a stir at pre-game warm-ups. It shows that he truly lives in his world.
James decided to warm up shirtless and in a durag. Reports after the fact state this may be common for him, but this time it was caught on camera, and by former guard Isaiah Thomas. Working an ESPN broadcast at the time, he did not hold back on his opinion of the situation. The broadcaster called out commissioner Adam Silver, Lebron, and the diminishing professionalism in the NBA.
“I would never let one of my players walk out on the floor looking like this. I mean, we are professional NBA league. We ain’t summer league,” said Thomas. He continued to say, “Adam Silver, if you wanna fine somebody, fine that, put a fine on that.” The internet is divided on this hot take.
Some will say it’s just a pregame warmup, while others see it as a sign of disrespect. The NBA has suggestions opposing James’ actions, but they do not enforce penalties for warm-up gear, and only require that the team match and be ready for introductions. So, is it only warmups, or is he being disrespectful at his place of employment?
Both sides of the argument have valid points. If this were another player, would there be the same lack of action from the NBA? Is he doing this because he knows the power he has inside the NBA? There is no winner or loser, but there aren’t reports of other players going shirtless and causing a stir. Fans have pointed out the hypocrisy in Thomas’ words this week, versus his actions as a player.
